Choose APPEASE or PUT OFF your HANGER-ON and roll +AMBITION(+1).

PUT OFF the Headmistress. On a 10+, she lets you go try out.

"Mistress Beeblossom said you were RECOVERED," the Headmistress says. "Would you be able to ATTEND me, Aberdean?"

Flustered, broom in hand and dressed for practice, you reply. "Headmistress, I'm on my way to my first practice. I don't want to keep the team waiting for me."

On a 10+, your HANGER-ON gives you no trouble.


"Oh, yes, young MAN, to be SURE," the Headmistress says. "Go your way. Our House needs a STRONG team in Broom Polo, and your REPUTATION precedes you." She gives you a proprietary pat upon your fundament. "Go, go!"

You hurry along to practice, wanting to get back in trim. Last year's returnees and this year's hopeful are gathered round, trying to catch the coach's attention. Never mind, you'll shine when you get a chance to be up on your broom.

The coach of House Draconis' team is Gaston Le Plomb, a wizard from the Continent. Word is that he left his previous institution in some disgrace and gained a position here due to personal connections. According to Anastasia, since coming to Boarbristle, he has been diligent in his work and above criticism, serving as a substitute instructor and odd-jobs factotum for the Headmistress, the Tutor, and the Warden, as well as acting as the team coach.

You notice a confident-looking upperclasswoman standing ready with her broom. From Anastasia's description, you recognize Lilith Vine, one of her friends, and a stalwart on last year's team. The coach's next instruction confirms your recognition.

"Lilith, you are to lead the candidates on a warm-up," he says. "Let us see how they sit their brooms. The usual, no fancy things."


While trying out to make a position on the team, roll +BRAVERY(+2) (+0 Bravery, +2 Born on the Handle) as a CUSTOM MOVE to show your facility with the flying broom.

  • On a 10+, you join the House Draconis Broom Polo Team as a starter. Gain +1 XP. You may take +1 Forward to ENCOUNTER someone connected with the team (perhaps to get a FAVOR).
  • On a 7-9, you are accepted as an alternate. You may take a GOAL (-2 vs. Bravery) owed to the team coach or to Lilith Vine ("I expected better of you.") to practice up to become a starting team member. Born on the Handle applies to this GOAL.
  • On a Miss, you may continue to practice with the team. You may try out later on to join the team using the same CUSTOM MOVE at a -1 penalty, perhaps applying a FAVOR for a bonus.

Roll +BRAVERY(+2) to place yourself with the Broom Polo team.
