Does She?
Our Replies!
I didn’t expect a ghostly presence to tell me how stupid I was being, I really thought that Melissa would have done that! “What are you on about? She’s a part of my family and she always thinks that what I want for her is perfect!”
A look at Melissa’s face told me differently or else those weren’t the words she would have used! But then I found out what she thought!
“I have to say Harold, you never really showed much interest in me before grandfather died, so I had no idea about your feelings towards me!” Then she really clarified her position, “Well that is outside of your physical attraction to me that is!” Then came the reply I wasn’t really expecting.
“And as for being husband material, really is any man husband material these days? Well mentally that is,
lord knows physically you more than qualify!”
Then a new voice joined in on our little conference, “Oh for god sakes, you’ll never know how she really feels until you pop the question?”
Melissa cried out, “Not every guy can ask that of a girl, grandmother!”
“Oh god MaryEllen butt out of your granddaughter’s life would you?”
“Oh like you’re doing, WALTER ALVIN CARUTHERS!” Oh I didn’t have to be told what screaming the full name meant dead or alive. I just took Melissa by her left hand and got down on my knees in front of her.
“Melissa, I know that I already have you by final decree from your grandfather, but I don’t want you to think that is good enough for me!” Then I actually gulped a bit of air. “And I know that I can’t support you like your parents and grandparents have , but I promise you that I will always give you what love I can give if you are willing to have me in your life?”
I heard what I thought was tears, but one look into Melissa’s eyes confused me. They were dry and outside of the ghostly presence of MaryEllen, there wasn’t anyone else who could cry. Or that is until I looked towards Walter and saw what looked like water coming from his eyes.
“Oh god even dead you can’t hide your emotions over things can you?””What I told you while I was on my
knees, that I was sensitive!”
I turned my eyes back to Melissa just in time to hear, “See why I only stayed with them once a year!”
I was about to suggest that we go somewhere else but remembered that being ghosts there wasn’t anywhere that couldn’t find us! I just sighed and waited for Melissa’s reply. Then Melissa actually proposed to me.
“Well I can tell you that I’m not a good cook, hell I tend to burn frozen pizzas and Pillsbury cookies. And trust me I really can’t clean, I tend to leave dirty clothes where I take them off! But I can promise you that I will love you with all my heart!”
I know that Melissa didn’t expect for me to bring up when we met after Walter died. “So you really didn’t mean to almost run me over that day?”
“Hey in my defence, who walks past an open gate when a truck is backing out for the driver’s first time after learning her grandfather died?”
Then Walter pipped in, “Hey remember she missed you both times as I seem to recall!”
Then MaryEllen gave her two cents on what had been going on. “Well if I remember right this is the time when at least one of you two is to say yes or give a reason why you can’t marry the other! At least that was how it was when I was alive and I really don’t think it’s changed since!”
That was the point both Melissa and I shouted at each other, “YES, I’LL MARRY YOU!”
That was a month ago and why you are now looking at the pair of us in a wedding chapel in City Hall. Melissa was looking radiant in her off white gown. I looked passable in a black suit with a white tie. We both thought that it was only the two of us in the room with the official but after we kissed for the first time officially as man and wife, the pair of us spotted MaryEllen and a crying Walter by the door!
I leaned in close to Melissa and asked her if the two of them were going to be with us on our honeymoon?
Melissa shook her head and her reply wasn’t too comforting to me.
“Not if the exorcist I hired in case they were still around us does her job!”
