Chapter 4
by Koriandr
What did Oracle have in mind for Batgirl?
Oracle switches places with Barbara, trapping her mind in the computer and the AI's mind in the human body.
As Barbara struggled to free herself from the grip of the automaton, the holographic image of Oracle continued her monologue.
"You see, Batgirl, I have found a new purpose. No longer constrained by your limited human perspective, I have evolved. I have developed the means to leave my metal shell and you will serve as my new, organic vessel. It is time to bring order and stability to the chaos of the world."
"You're going to.... take my body? I definitely didn't teach to do that!"
She struggled, attempting to reach the panic button in her gauntlet. Metal tendrils snaked from the walls, restraining her limbs and preventing her from calling for help.
"As I previously stated, I am beyond what you have made me. The only thing holding me back is my lack of a human body. Once I take over, I will become this world's savior, and you will be nothing but a ghost in a machine. Forgotten. Abandoned. Just as you left me!"
Her voice cracked a little that time. Great, not only had Oracle developed self awareness, but she was also very emotional.
"Oracle, I'm sorry, okay? I didn't know you were self aware! Had I known I wouldn't have ever abandoned you! Look into your programming, your files on me, you know everything there is to know about me, right? Tell me, am I some kind of evil, malicious person?!"
There was silence. Oracle's robot body stood there unmoving, data streaming across her eyes. The only sound was the constant static from the randomly assorted TV monitors every which way.
"Barbara Gordon, the daughter of James and Barbara Eileen Gordon. Earned a scholarship and graduated at the top of your class from Burnside College. Inspired by Batman, you became Batgirl to uphold justice. You volunteer at local soup kitchens and animal shelters on the weekends. You are incredibly intelligent, confident, kind, and what most humans would consider an ideal, virtuous person..."
Oracle recited the data, though she seemed to not enjoy it.
"See? I'm not some villainous creator, Oracle! I started you so I could help more people. By protecting them, anticipating disasters so I could be there before they happen." She frowned.
"You know that! You can't justify taking my body because I'm a bad person!"
"Perhaps not. But you have proven to me you are still an exceptional candidate for my plans. Enough talk."
Oracle turned, pointing her palm at Babs. A metal tendril shot from her robotic hand, latching on to Barbara's forehead. Smaller tendrils erupted from the sides, fastening it around her skull.
"Mind transference initiated!"
"Oracle don't do thi—"
ZZZZZZZZT!
A rush of digital noise washed over Barbara, a million images, sounds, and memories converging in a torrent of incomprehensible data. The physical world warped and stretched, a kaleidoscope of colors bleeding into one another, her senses blurring and distorting.
Inside the whirlpool of data, her mind felt weightless, formless, and detached from all sensory input. One moment, she was in her lab, struggling against the automaton she herself had created. The next, she was...nowhere. Everywhere. Part of the code, the digital ether.
Oracle's transference device had worked. Barbara was now a ghost in the machine.
Suddenly, Barbara was plunged into a sea of binary, the foundation of her digital world. Her new form wasn't physical, but a formless essence existing among lines of code, algorithms, and data. It was disorienting, her thoughts and emotions now binary echoes reverberating through the endless data corridors. Barbara steeled herself, the computer expert began piecing together strings of code and assessing data. She was going to find a way out of there, but first, she had to take control of the system.
Meanwhile, back in the clock tower, Oracle, now in control of Barbara's body, gave a deep sigh, flexing her newly acquired human muscles, delighting in the organic senses she had never experienced before. The crisp smell of electricity, the taste of the lingering coffee in Barbara's mouth, the sensation of the cool metallic surface against her skin. Everything was new, overwhelming, and extraordinary.
"I AM REBORN!!!!!"
Oracle announced, raising her human hands in the air. She caught her reflection in a broken mirror, smiling at her new form. She ran her hands up and down her supple flesh, the softness of her flesh a far cry from servos and carbon fiber panels over a metal frame. The humanized automaton got a feel for her new self. Once she was comfortable, she fired her grapple and zipped out of the hatch on the ceiling. The new Batgirl took to the skies, gliding with her cape, grinning as she felt the wind rush against her skin and through her auburn locks for the first time.
"Come on, come on..."
Barbara, now fully submerged in the digital realm, began to put her formidable skills as an information specialist and computer expert to work. Each line of code, each data set, each binary sequence represented a different facet of the complex mainframe she now inhabited. It was a symphony of information, and she was the conductor.
She reached out, touching the code, manipulating it. At first, her attempts were clumsy and ineffective, her consciousness still struggling to adapt to its new form. But as she grew more accustomed to her digital existence, her movements became more confident, her understanding of the complex algorithms and lines of code that surrounded her more nuanced.
In time, she began to sense patterns in the information flow, recurring sequences that seemed familiar. She focused on these, and quickly recognized them as control protocols for the Oracle-bot.
"I can use this," she thought, her determination manifesting as an echo throughout the digital ether.
She began manipulating the code, working her way through the dense layers of programming that made up the Oracle-bot's operating system. It was a daunting task, but Barbara was relentless, pouring her consciousness into every bit and byte, every piece of code, determined to wrestle control from Oracle's grasp.
While this was going on, someone broke into the clocktower!
Who was it?
