One Hell of a Day
The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time we returned to camp, casting long violet shadows over the hills. A warm, savory scent curled through the air, tugging at our weariness like a familiar embrace. Wyll stood by the campfire, wooden spoon in hand, stirring a bubbling pot over open flame. The rich aroma of spiced meat and vegetables rivaled even Raphael’s hellish banquet from earlier.
Withers was seated on a nearby rock, skeletal fingers laced together, speaking in his usual cryptic riddles. Wyll, surprisingly, was listening with genuine interest.
"Sacrifice," Withers intoned, "is the coin by which we purchase the path ahead."
Wyll furrowed his brow. "I get the feeling you're talking about me."
"Only as much as you are listening," Withers replied with a subtle tilt of his skull.
Karlach chuckled as we approached. "You two are getting friendly."
Wyll glanced up with a grin. "He’s not so bad once you get under his off-putting outer shell."
"Likewise," Withers responded.
Wyll rolled his fingers across his horns and smirked. "Touché."
The atmosphere in camp was light, easy. We found spots around the fire and Wyll began handing out bowls.
"So," Wyll asked between bites, "how was your day out in the world?"
"The Gnoll ambush was terrifying," I started.
"...and we saved a noble knight from fire at the local inn," Shadowheart added.
"We got new toys from an Undercity shop filled with rogues," Karlach said proudly.
"A devil wasted our time, teleporting us to his castle," Lae'zel finished.
Wyll blinked. "Wait, what?"
Karlach laughed. "All in a day's work."
"That’s... that's a lot to unpack," he said, rubbing his forehead.
Lae'zel grunted, as if dismissing the chaos as routine. Shadowheart sipped her drink with a sly smirk.
After a few moments we found our regular seats around the fire. I turned to Karlach. "So, how does it feel getting away from Avernus?"
Her expression softened. "Every damn day is a blessing. It's like breathing fresh air after living in stinging smoke for years. I'm finally free, well almost." She thumped her fist to her chest.
Wyll glanced down at his bowl, silent. I caught movement in his eye—eerily not his own.
"You deserve it," I said gently.
"Thanks," she replied, offering a warm smile. "This adventure—these days in the wilderness—they're honestly kind of wonderful, you know? They really are."
Shadowheart nodded slowly. "It's quite enjoyable, and the fresh air feels good on the skin."
Lae'zel nodded absently, her attention wholly absorbed in each bite—her sensitive mouth savoring every texture and flavor with visible satisfaction
Wyll stood with a soft grunt. "Well, seeing I don't need anymore rituaIs I should better get some rest."
"Was he too much for you last night? or do you want tentacles to match the horns?" Karlach asked intrigued.
"Apparently Volo's botched lobotomy hurt the tadpole as well" Wyll explained.
"So you're telling me it worked?" Shadowheart asked, alarmed.
"A bit," he admitted. "Partial results. Not a full cure."
Lae'zel shrugged. "A small price for a remedy. Yet, I am not jealous."
"I wouldn't trade places either" Karlach added
"Neither would I," Shadowheart finished and turned to me with a wink.
Wyll gave a nod. "Good night, everyone."
As he disappeared into his tent, Karlach leaned over. "Ritual time? I claim first. Come find me in a minute or two."
"My turn after." Shadowheart chimed in with girlish enthusiasm.
"And I will finish." Lae'zel said, looking me straight in the eye and licking her lips.
The way they said it, like lining up at a dessert table, made me stifle a laugh.
"Busy night," I murmured.
Shadowheart gave a sultry smile. "Better not keep us waiting."
As the stars emerged in the darkening sky and the fire crackled low, the camp settled into its usual rhythm...
