Chapter 80 by Zingiber Zingiber

You hurry away from Grace's room to ready yourself for the duel with Albert Conker. Taking her advice, you comb oil through your hair. Looking at the mirror, Grace is right -- in Leontes robes, with your hair smoothed out and down, you could almost be sisters. The last key to the resemblance is Grace's enchanted ring, hidden in your pocket for now, lest you loose the Seeming by accident.

You find a quiet corner to compose yourself and practice your concentration and your quickness. You don't feel quite yourself, even a little dreamy from the long afternoon with Grace, followed by a nap. But what's done is done.

Finally it's time. You take your place in the dueling pit and slip the ring onto your finger.

It's a larger, more curious audience of Leontes scholars in their red House robes this time, and a few guests conspicuous with green, brown, and black robes by House.

Albert Conker stands facing opposite you. He looks excited, with one victory under his belt already, having seen off Sextus Chain, who had been the favorite in his first duel. Visibly excited. Albert's willie is prominently tenting out the skirt of his red and gold House Leontes robe.

Preston Sharper, the Tutor, checks you for readiness. He holds the sparkling ward at the center of the long alley of the dueling pit.

Remember, thumb on the ring when you raise your wand.

"On my mark," the Tutor says.

You raise your wand and touch your thumb to Grace's ring. A tingle of magic washes over you.

"Go." The ward drops.

Conker's lip curls. He hesitates just long enough for you to land CHARM upon him.

"Conker?" you call.

He frowns. "What is it, Winterthorn, no, Woodbine?"

"Duel's over, right?"

Conker grunts, blinks, and shrugs. "Yah. Sure." He lowers his wand. "Done."

You nod and lower your wand in turn.

"Then you can go take care of yourself, eh?" You move your hand up and down in front of the knot of your robe's belt.

There's a ripple of laughter from the spectators.

Preston Sharper clears his throat. "Order!" he calls. "Albert Conker, please follow the Assistant Warden. Morgan Woodbine, you are the victor in the second round. Come forward to the centre."

Albert follows the Assistant Warden into the wings, looking over his shoulder at you. His excitement hasn't ebbed, and his robe is still tented out in front. You give him a speculative glance before stepping up to the midpoint of the dueling pit.

The Tutor replaces your first-round victor's pin with a slightly larger one with a similar crossed-wands design encircled by a rosette.

"I'm surprised," he says. "But sometimes duels go like that." His brow furrows. But the momentary seeming has dissipated, and there's no trace of your subterfuge.

You bow your head. "Thank you, Tutor," you say.

"Get a good night's rest, last round is tomorrow before breakfast."

"Yes, Tutor," you say.


You have +2 Ambition, -1 Bravery, +2 Cunning, +0 Diligence.

Your FRIENDS are Fay and Grace Winterthorn.

You have a special GOAL owed to the Tutor to win three duels. You have won two out of three. You may take an additional +1 XP and gain the office of Prefect within House Leontes if you win one more.

You have 1 XP.

  • You may attempt to catch Albert while he's still under your CHARM, like you did with Grace: roll +BRAVERY (+1) (-1 Bravery, +2 CHARM) to ENCOUNTER him. You might ask him to HAVE SEX (and perhaps apply your Leontes Sex Move).
  • Alternatively make a Move to ENCOUNTER Fay or Grace or Golondrina.
  • Or describe what you do before tomorrow's duel.

ENCOUNTER Albert: roll +BRAVERY(+1), narrate your evening, or make another Move.
