Chapter 6
by
Nanking
What's next?
Nudity now in technicolor
"Yo Mac" A gruff voice yelled in the distance. "You see something over there."
"Yeah Joe," A gravelly voice replied, "It looks weirdly...not grey."
Gwen face turned pure crimson as she scrambled to her feet, her bare skin prickling against the cold wind as she scanned the construction site before her. In the far distance she could just barely make out the grey figures, Mac and Joe, in the distance. They were so far away she didn't understand how they could have spotted her until she looked down at her hands. The only things in her view still in color.
"Oh shit," Gwen squealed. "In this universe I'm basically glowing!"
Gwen flung her arms over her chest and sprinted for cover before the workers got to interested in the concept of color. The skeletal framework of a half-built skyscraper loomed in monochrome, its exposed girders and wooden scaffolding offering both danger and cover. The distant clang of metal and occasional shout of workers sent her pulse racing—she had to move fast.
Hunching low, her bare feet silent against the packed dirt, she darted between stacks of lumber and piles of bricks. Each time she hid, Gwen felt the rough and earthy material against her soft bare skin. It was unpleasant. Eventually she made it under the structure and switch hiding behind rugged building material for smooth metallic girders. She moved effortlessly through the site gripping to every scrap of cover she could find. Eventually she was in sight of the construction yards exit. Gwen smiled just a little further and she'd be back on the streets. She glanced down at herself and remembered that wasn't really an improvement.
"What are we doing Mac?" Joe asked. "We're supposed to be working."
"We can work once we find that weird glow." Mac replied. "Come on, I think I saw it over there."
"Oh shit!" Gwen cursed as she frantically looked around. Hiding behind a pillar wasn't enough if they were looking for her. Gwen spotted a thin concrete pipe lying discarded near the foundation pit. Without hesitation, she bolted for it, her bare feet kicking up dust as she dove headfirst into the narrow opening. The rough interior scraped against her hips and shoulders as she wriggled deeper into the tube, the cool concrete pressing against her flushed skin.
From her hiding spot, she could hear work boots crunching gravel nearby. A gruff voice called out, "You see that?" followed by the sound of a wrench clanging against metal. Gwen held her breath, pressing her knees together as a shadow fell across the pipe's opening.
The shadow lingered for a breathless moment; Gwen could smell the stale coffee and cigarette smoke clinging to the men’s overalls. A foot stepped firmly onto the concrete tube, sending a vibration humming through the pipe pressed against her spine.
"Ain’t nothin’ in here but rats and bad decisions," Mac grunted, his voice muffled through the tube. Gwen bit her lip hard enough to taste copper as his boot scuffed the dirt just inches from her toes.
Then, blessedly, the shadow shifted. "Damn, Joe, guess you're right.
We’re wastin’ daylight." Joe replied, his boots scuffed away, gravel crunching under their weight. Gwen let out a shuddering breath, her ribs aching from being squished between concrete. But before she could even think of crawling out, a metallic screech split the air as the pipe lurched around her.
Suddenly Gwen felt a loss of her equilibrium as the pipe suddenly started swaying. Cold panic shot through her as the world tilted. Rusted chains groaned somewhere above, and suddenly the pipe was lifting, her bare skin scraping against rough concrete as gravity dragged her back and forth across the tube. She flung out her arms, fingers sticking to the walls of the tube keeping her in place. She was still, relatively, but she still swayed with the swinging of the pipe. At one point the front of the pipe swayed down granting Gwen a view of the yard below and the exit she was heading for getting farther and farther way. She squealed in frustration, what was she supposed to do now? The chains above again shrieked like a dying animal louder and closer than before. She was almost at the top where the pipe would be received by more workers and they would defiantly see her. In a surge of adrenaline, she twisted her body, kicking against the inner curve of the tube. With a **** gasp, she launched herself forward out of the pipe and into the side of a vertical girder. The second her skin made contact, her spider stickiness took effect, and she was glued to the metallic pillar. She shivered as pressing her bare skin against cool metal sent a shiver down her spine.
"Alright boys lets grab that think and get to work." An annoyed voice yelled above Gwen. She looked up and saw the pipe had stopped one level above her. A level covered in wooding planks for the myriad of workers currently decupling the pipe to use. If Gwen had waited a second longer to escape, she be surrounded by those burly men in her birthday suit. Gwen shifted her position clamoring to the other side of the girder before the men unhooking the pipe had a chance to see her.
"Now what?" Gwen whispered to herself watching the men scurry around above her. She rather not go up there and crawling all the way back down wouldn't go unnoticed. Gwen’s fingers began to tremble against the cold steel. Was she just going to stuck up here forever? She craned her neck, scanning her surroundings for somewhere to go. Then she saw it, just a few yards away, the skeletal frame of the half-built skyscraper reached out towards the neighboring building. One outstretched girder pointed right at a single open window.
"A way out!" Gwen gasped quickly covering her mouth so the workers couldn't hear her. 'Gotta Move, gotta move, gotta move,' She thought to herself as she peeled herself from the girder, then landing on another. She scuttled silently towards the window like a spider. Periodically the structure would moan under her added weight and some of the workers mulling about above her would look down. Luckily, she was able to hide either behind vertical pillars or sometimes directly under horizontal girders until they got bored and looked away. The wind bit at her exposed skin as she hung upside down. Finally, she made it to the last girder there was only one more hurdle. Literally. There was a gap between the window and the construction site. It was farther than she thought.
"Ok Gwen," she said stretching her legs. "Time to see if those dance lessons were worth it."
Spider-Gwen sprinted forward her feet slapping against the beam. It reminded her of the balance beams she used to use in class and like in class she launched off the beam and flew through the air arm above her head and leg bent forward. As she approached the window, she bent her body forward and shot headfirst into the window. It was a ten out of ten performance. Too bad no one was there to see it.
"Jesus Joe did you see that?"
Almost no one.
"Oh, you mean the naked dame silhouetted in the moonlight? No Mac, I must have missed it."
"Well, who do you think she was? And why does she look like that all...bright?"
"I don't know Mac, but I'll tell you this. I'll never forget it.
The two men continued their smoke break unsure what to think about the spectacle they had just witnessed.
Where is she now?
