Chapter 11

Where are they going?
Nowhere if Abbey has anything to say about it
Pulled outside by her her sister Sara, Abbey visibly cringed as she found herself outside dressed like a little tomboy in denim shortalls and scuffed up sneakers while her younger sister looked elegant and sophisticated wearing Abbey's tailored pantsuit, silk blouse and heels. Walking to the car she wondered where they were going. Her family had simply said they were going out, but to where exactly. Before she knew it she was piled into the car and trapped in the middle of the back sear between her Aunt and her cousin. It didn't seem fair to her that Sara should get to ride in the front seat, she was the oldest child and if one of them should have that privilege it should be her, at least that was how it always had been in the past.
Her mother drove them out of their neighborhood and then through town humming a little song. Abbey didn't like this one bit. There wasn't much in this little town and everyone knew everyone else. Wherever they were taking her it wasn't going to be good.
Abbey thought quickly, she had to end this little outing, but what could she do? Her family weren't really in the mood to do anything just to please her, they had made that fairly clear. Still she had to do something or she would soon find herself in public looking like a total idiot. "Oh thorry, we need to go back to the houthe everybody.." Abbey began.
"Why is that honey?" Her mother asked as she turned the car into the parking lot.
Abbey didn't have a good reason but finally went with something simple and halfway plausible, "I don't have my contactth in, we left in thuth a hurry i forgot them. I can hardly thee a thing."
"Oh dear, we can't have that," Her mother reasoned giving Abbey hope that her little ploy might have actually worked. Then Sara piped up.
"Don't worry," Sara said with a wink, "I had a feeling you might have forgotten something so I have your bag right here..." she rummaged in it a bit and then pulled something out, "... and eureka, you can wear these," and with that she handed back to Abbey her own spare pair of eyeglasses.
"Oh, thankth," was all Abbey could manage as she took the proffered eyewear. She hated this pair and never wore them outside, only at home with the doors locked and the window blinds drawn. She found them intensely unflattering and hated how they left little marks on the bridge of her nose. "You know what, it'th ok, i can thee well enough," she finally decided to say, completely contradicting what she had said just a moment before.
"No, Abbey, you better put those on," Her mother told her however, "We know you're nearly blind without them and we don't want to have any accidents now do we?"
"I guethth not," Abbey admitted and reluctantly put the glasses on knowing she must looked like an absolute dork wearing the rather dated heavy round rimmed glasses, but pleased to be able to see better. That is until they pulled up to their destination.
