Chapter 55

What may be waiting in town for them?
Nothing more than Norman's men
The trip home took awhile thanks to all of the paths being immensely overgrown. With Oliver hacking through the plant growth in our way, a lot of questions were either asked for no answer or to me. I tried to answer as many as I could, but referred a few to Oliver to make sure that I either didn't accidentally reveal something of myself or say something he didn't want said.
In the end, they decided they were not satisfied with my reserved and minimalist answers, and began theorizing amongst themselves. They came up with some of the wildest ideas, it was honestly enjoyable to listen to. It most certainly served as a good distraction until we made it back to town.
As we walked through the streets, there was a different air to the city. There were much less people out than I would expect for this time of day, and no one seemed to be going towards the main square, an area that was typically bustling. It was once we reached the edge of the town center that I realized why.
Leaning against the tavern, was Kyle Normn. But that's not all, around him were his lackies, including Mason, who seemed somewhat tense. In addition, there were a few people in full armor wearing the crest of the Normn family, Nathaniel standing at the head of their group. I looked around, expecting to see another Normn child but that seemed to be it.
As we arrived, Kyle Stood up and Nathaniel began to approach. I let out a sigh and gestured for the party to go on without me. Oliver gave me a glance before hesitantly complying, and Natalia followed the rest with a torn expression.
With them leaving, I turned to the other two, "You seem to be missing three sisters, or is this not another family gathering?"
Kyle gave an exaggerated laugh, "Ha, oh look, he's a funny man now."
Nathaniel gritted his teeth and held a hand to stop Kyle from doing anything, "By order of my father, Baron Norman Normn, we are here to deliver the deed to your new property." He shoved his hand forward, that was clenching a now partially crumpled document.
I took it from him and looked it over, seeing that as long as the laws were similar here as to home, everything was in order. "Very good, thank you. Any chance I could be shown to it?"
Nathaniel looked as if he wanted to strangle me, but simply let out a forceful exhale before performing an about face. "Very well." Nathaniel wasted no more time before he began walking, the soldiers following swiftly behind.
Kyle looked to him and back to me before shrugging and following his brother. I looked to the tavern and saw Natalia sneaking peeks through the window, giving her a wave and a smile before following as well.
It took us quite a good amount of walking to reach the plot of land I was given for my church. 'Figures. It's not like he would give prime real estate for somewhat free. Plus, him not giving me any good land gives him evidence he isn't favoring me. He is a smart man, I will watch him in the future.'
The walk to the property was relatively silent. Every now and then we would come across a pedestrian, however they would quickly go away, seemingly not wanting to be involved in a situation with the two Normn brothers. Of course, Nathaniel was completely happy not speaking to me, and Kyle was making some form of lowbrow conversation with his gang.
When we finally reached the location, it was safe to say I was somewhat disappointed. It was a decent size, however there was nothing of note nearby, and the houses around were all seemingly deserted. I took a look of the empty plot with unhide-able distaste.
Kyle was quick to pick up on it, "What, you got a problem? I will have you know this is in my part of town, so you better show me some respect from now on!" He had an impish grin, like he expected me owning land in his seemingly imaginary claim meant I would actually listen to him.
Instead, I quickly cemented the dynamic. "I see, that most certainly explains the horrid state of it. Even if you live nearby, I will make no request for you to join the church."
He let out a scoff, "Better watch your tongue, at least you know I'm too good for your shitty faith."
I rolled my eyes and clicked my tongue, "No, it is because I have no wish to see your ugly face or hear your ugly voice again. I am most certain my god would not care for one lost potential follower, as long as it is you."
Nathaniel actually let out an amused chuckle at that. As Kyle turned red with rage, his brother grabbed his arm and began pulling him away.
Nathaniel gave one last shout over his shoulder, "Father will give assistance if you need it, if you come to the manor in person."
Well, I wonder if we will?
