Nothing, Sharon acts first

"Oh fuck." Sharon rushed forward, trying to push her boyfriend out as she was pushing Dan a few moments ago. "David, you can't be here. I need to be with Dan. Please just go."

Confused, David pushed his way past her. "What are you talking about? I live here. Is this that Dan guy? Is he threatening you?" David rounded on Dan, fuming.

Dan didn't know this guy, but he wasn’t about to get knocked out by his ex's new guy. "David, don't you want to figure out what's going on more calmly?'

David's expression relaxed from an angry grimace to a placid serenity. Dan makes a good point. It would be way better to chill out and ask some questions. In fact, he had no other choice. "Yeah, ok. Cool. Sharon, what do you mean you need to be with Dan?"

Sharon's eyes dart between the two men. "David, I'm sorry, but I can't be your girlfriend anymore. I love Dan. He's everything to me."

David nodded pensively. "Huh. I thought you said you hated this guy? What changed?"

"I don't know. All I know is that he is my world. My reason for living. I love him, and I want to spend the rest of my life at his side." Sharon offered no further platitudes to David. It's just how things were.

With a disappointed "Tsk", David turned to Dan. "Shoot, man. Lucky you. Sharon's awesome. I'm not about to push things, but this is a bummer."

Even though Dan knew it was a **** demeanor, he couldn't help but feel for the guy a bit. "Hey, man, all's fair in love and war. Don't you want to be happy that Sharon is happy? If you really love her, that's all you need."

David beamed, reaching a hand out to Dan. His whole perspective on life shifted again in an instant. "You're right, buddy. Glad she found you again. You do right by her, yeah? Treat her well."

Hm. A nice conclusion. But after his mistreatment at the hands of Sharon, Dan didn't want David looking out for her. "Sure, I guess. But actually, isn't it more important that I'm happy to be with her? If I'm not, I might just leave her alone, and she'd be miserable. So you need ME to be happy to be with Sharon, right?"

His head spinning from such enormous shifts in his central motivation, David whirled around to face Sharon. He stared at her strangely for a moment, trying to puzzle things out. Sharon just stood there awkwardly, her hands touching her lips nervously. Finally, David spoke up again. "Yeah... yeah, Sharon, if you're leaving me for Dan, you have to do better this time. Keep him happy however you can. Like, even more than I was with you."

Sharon, a little weirded out by David's behavior, gave a slight nod. But he didn't matter anymore. No need to give him more thought. "So... can you go, then? It'd be easier if I never saw you again. It'd just be a distraction."

David began sauntering out the door in response. Turning back one more time, he shot Dan the finger guns. "Stay happy!" He turned on his way, off to live his life in satisfaction knowing that Dan was happy with Sharon.

With nothing left to distract her, Sharon decided to take a bold step. It was sudden. It was fast. But she just proved that no other man mattered more to her. She needed to seize that momentum. She NEEDED to be his wife. "Dan, I want to show you how much you mean to me. I want to commit to you forever. Dan, please... will you marry me?"
