Not quite what he predicted

"...would you be willing to marry Kayleigh?" The question surprised Jesse so much he almost fell off the couch, which was way bigger than the one he had at home.

Laying on the floor, he looked at the dad with a half serious, half funny face. "What? R-really?" Every second spent with that dad flipped Jesse's life by 180 degrees over and over again.

"Yeah, I mean..." He eyed the younger pair and took on a more serious face. "She's almost always talking about you, how nice you are, that you look like a promising man and all that stuff..."

"Dad!" Kayleigh was embarrassed, but in a cute way, she was sure her master would never know of all that.

"Make a move on him already! You followed him around all that time and you can't even take this one little step?" Her dad was obviously fed up with her, but why?

"Excuse me, but... all the time?" Jesse was actually getting interested, did the girl follow him for longer than he might have thought?

"Few years ago, you saved a girl from being ridden over by a truck, right?" The dad sounded as if it was a natural thing but Jesse couldn't remember it one bit.

Or could he? "Now that you mention it... I completely forgot about that!" He didn't forget though, it was more as if he never remembered it. In his past, he never did that. But here, where hermaphrodites existed, he happened to save one of them, for some reason he wasn't able to remember anymore.

"And that's how you saved our little girl. Ever since that day, she wanted to meet you and thank you, but being a bit shy, she couldn't get herself to do it. I'd like to do it right now, as a parent, so... thank you!" He bowed down, almost reaching the floor.

"No, no, please! It's nothing special, really. And she already thanked me... in a way." Jesse's gaze went sideways ambiguously.

"In what way?" That was the question they didn't want to hear.
