Chapter 91 by yamidamian
Any novel obstacles?
Not particularly, until the last first floor room.
Just like the first stretch after we entered, the next series of rooms focused more on moving our bodies than anything else. Except, instead of normal traps, it was more realms I'd call platforming-levitating metal floors suspended over whirring layers of pistons that would probably be akin to a meatgrinder if we fell in. At first, there wasn't any kind of urgency-and so we could make it easily enough. Then, annoyance got added-bat-like constructs harrying us from above as we tried to make it across. Fortunately, we had a good archer and a few fliers of our own, and these small things were a lot less well armored than their groundbound cousins-their core exposed on their backs, so a single good hit did them in.
We finally reached a room wihout any apparent doors out, and a decently sized chest in a central platform surrounded by three large statues on different platforms moving about the room. Before we even checked for the box itself, to be rigged to something, we went ahead and removed the statue heads and cut off that source of potential cliched trap. And we were right on the money-indicated as Arete opened it to nothing but a loud green sparking from them, and no more action. This chest didn't contain any semi-valuable loot like the last bit-instead appearing to be some kind of device-mostly a plat plane of metal with a few cogwheels fused into it, with a pair of handles at the far end of it. Arete gives it a puzzled look and a few experimental swings, seemingly uncomfortable with its heft, so I point out to him. "That's not a weapon-think it's used to activate something elsewhere." He just nodded his understanding before stowing it as we have to backtrack, doubling back ourselves. Thankfully, the mechanical bats hadn't started spawning again, so it was just a manner of patiently waiting for opportunities to jump-and maybe, sparing a few moments to think of some way to wipe the smug look the dragon shot back at us as she just flew across. At least the harpy was less full of itself about its advantage.
Without having any sign the central pillar had moved, there was one last way for us to check if we wanted to do this properly. At first the room was incredibly dark-a curious thing, considering the otherwise omnipresent sourceless light that made it easy to see throughout the rest of the place. Given the love of traps in this place, this lead to some of us being very cautious about stepping forward-jumping a little when the door slammed loudly behind us. Fortunately, the pitch dark was a temporary state of affairs-a series of torches along the perimeter of the chamber soon flared up one after another to give the place an ominous orange glow as they illuminated a construct in the middle of the room-shaped in all it's glory like a knight in dark armor, save for probably clocking in at twice my height. Before we could try what worked before-disabling it before it could activate- it flares to life, a dull green glow coming from behind its visor and it hefts a hammer larger than me in one hand. With the way back out slammed shut, and nothing but this guy here, that can only mean one thing:
