Not for a couple of days

The next couple of days drag by so slowly. Felicity tries to focus but all she can think about is the weekend ahead. She restrains herself from messaging him though, trusting that he will be in touch when he is ready. It means though that every time her phone announces an incoming message, she grabs at it immediately to check if it is him or not. But it’s always just one of her friends.

Wednesday evening is netball practice straight after school, which at least gives her a couple of hours away from her phone. Slightly exhausted from the workout, she returns to the changing rooms, already stripping out of her netball kit as she picks her phone up to check for new messages. There’s five waiting, and she opens them up without any expectations, sure they will be from her mates. The first four are, but suddenly she spots his name on the fifth.

“I hope you are still free at the weekend Flis” it simply reads and her heart starts to beat even faster than it had during the hardest parts of the training session. Around her teammates are chatting and laughing about the session as they strip off and head to the showers, but Felicity doesn’t pay them any attention as she thinks what to reply with.

“Come on slowcoach” Chloe calls from the showers, “you can check your messages later.”

“One minute, I need to…” Felicity starts, stopping herself from saying anything that might give her secret away, “reply to my mum” she finishes, hoping that will sound convincing.

“Of course I am. Can’t wait” she messages him back, wondering if she should add a kiss or something but stops herself, deciding to keep it simple. She puts her phone back down and strips off the rest of her uniform before heading to join the rest of the team in the showers. By the time she comes back out, towel wrapped around her, she spots a new message waiting for her. “Would you like me to pick you up from school or would you like to go home first and we can meet up later? Understand if school might be a little awkward for you if your friends wonder who I am.”

She tries to stay calm and not show her friends her excitement as she reads it again, her mind racing as she considers if she should let him pick her up directly after school on Friday or not?

“What’s up with you Flis, you not planning to get dressed tonight?” Chloe teases her, and as Felicity looks up from her phone she sees her teammates all dressing ready to leave for the evening, whilst she is still just in her towel. She puts her phone down, deciding that it will at least give herself a little more time to consider what she should suggest for Friday. As she finishes by slipping her shoes on, there is only herself and Chloe left, who is idly checking her own phone as she waits by the door. With the two living close to one another, they’ve always walked home together after training and usually tell each other all their secrets. But tonight Felicity is eager to be alone again so she can message him back as soon as possible.
