Not Without a Rebuttal

The newly-created Angel dropped through non-space helplessly, their wings unable to catch them in this airless environment. Aria flailed at first, trying in vain to right themselves, until a voice echoed through their head.

"C'mon, sis. You said you knew what you were doing!" Carnachias' panicked voice blurted into Aria's mind, causing the dark champion to wince and raise their hands to try and shield their ears.

"You can't rush something like this, and whatever that idiot angel did fused off everything I've... Wait a second, I got it!" Melanoche's tone was more clipped, stressed but not afraid, "Champion, can you hear us?"

"I-- Think so?" Aria inquired, "Care to explain what the fuck just happened to me?"

"The Light cheated. Again." Carnachias asserted, her mostly-uncovered body manifesting itself floating near the falling monster-woman, "They thought they could hijack you and get away with it!"

Aria noticed that they didn't seem to be falling anymore. Instead, they were floating in the clouds surrounded by a comfortingly-chilled wall of water vapor.

Melanoche closed her eyes, "I was able to get access to your Arcane Weave, but much of it is already solidifying now that you have entered the world. I can't change your Core at all, and the lovely HUD I'd made for you is ruined! As it is, you're too unstable to keep your body together. The moment you hit the ground you'll tear yourself apart. I just don't know how to-- Wait, that's it!"

At Aria and Carnachias' expressions, alarmed and perplexed respectively, the more-aloof goddess continued, "Sister, do you remember when that cohort of Angels stumbled into your domain?"

"What are you..." Carnachias turned toward an incandescent grin, "Oh, OH. Their moans were so delightful, I still remember--" Her fingers drifted downward, slipping into her underwear, but before she could elaborate her sister cut her off.

"Precisely. Fallen Angels aren't as refined as true demons, but it'll be closer to what you asked for in the first place. Plus, with enough confidence you might still be able to convince people that you’re an angel." Melanoche elaborated. Chuckling to herself.

“Maybe if they’re blind, I guess.” Carnachias responded, “And you say I’m the one with a fried brain. Don’t expect to fool anyone, and expect that you’re going to be dealing with some hit to your durability in exchange for the bigger increase in offensive power you’re gonna get. Try not to get hit too many times, yeah?”

Aria gritted their teeth, taking a deep breath for steadiness and nodding along, “If it’ll keep me alive then I’ll take it. Is there anything else that I have to worry about like that?” They asked intently, just as their body began to alter itself once more.

The changes were subtler now, primarily in the form of their wings shifting from white to black and a recovery of the height they’d lost, but the real change came in the magic which coursed through their veins. The darkness once again crackled against the light within their soul, but now the two seemed to interact even more explosively than before. Even simple things like breathing and perceiving their heartbeat seemed more acute and forceful than before, and a smile played across their face.

“Hah… Finally stable again. No exploding into sparkling motes of Darkness and Light for you. We need you ready to live up to your side of the bargain. So how do you feel? Sufficiently Fallen for your liking?” Melanoche’s voice finally lost its urgency, gaining a hint of anticipation.

“I guess I feel sparkling? I didn’t feel like I was going to explode before, but I definitely don’t now either. I think I remember how to breathe and all that, but do you have any suggestions for what I do once I get to the ground?” Aria asked, feeling nerves creep into their voice as they tried and failed to flex the unfamiliar muscles that must’ve been their wings.

“First task, don’t fall and die! Second… I don’t know, find something to fuck up and see what leveling up feels like. Apparently it’s better than sex, if you ask that Barbarian bitch the Heroes picked up. I can’t imagine they’re right though, sex is the best part of existing! I would know, I invented it!” Carnachias’ voice raised to a shout, prompting Melanoche’s palm and face to become a bit better acquainted.

“Sister, you did not… Sexual reproduction existed before… You know what, nevermind. Our Champion needn’t hear us argue about all of this. Good luck, Champion! We will be watching you intently!” With those final words the goddesses disappeared, and Aria once again began to fall.

This time, though, they had a modicum of control as to their speed and direction. They tried again to flex their wings, and eventually managed to at least hold them steady enough to begin gliding rather than dropping. Beneath them was a wide and expansive arboreal forest, its treetops capped with snow and rising high above the ground. The trees were close enough together that they had to tuck their wings in and accept the additional speed in exchange, but barely a few moments went between that and hitting the ground.

When Aria was introduced to the ground of their new world, they did so more-or-less side-on. A cloud of snow and dirt was thrown up around them, but aside from a series of dull aches throughout their body they couldn’t feel anything broken. They slowly drew themselves to their feet once more and looked outward, attempting to determine where exactly they might be.
