Chapter 14 by tempura tempura

Where to?

Northwest.

"How about... we head to the northwest. Can't hurt to be closer to a source of water we can actually drink, right?"

Yu nods. "I was thinking the same thing. Should also have fish, which is good. I don't think we should count on being able to rely on that crate of food."

"Great," you rise from the sand. "Let's grab the rest of the coconuts and-"

"Wait," Yu interrupts, her tone suddenly grave. "There is one thing worth mentioning. Water is a basic necessity. We're not sure how many people actually are on this island, but it's a safe bet to say that there may be others at the lake. And based on the note, I'm not sure if we can count on them being friendly."

You think for a moment. "...That is true... but we can't just hope that there'll always be coconut water, or streams, or whatever. We need something to fall back on. I'd rather check out the area now, when we're still in top-shape, just in case there are enemies. Who knows what condition we'll be in in a month. I mean, not to sound pessimistic or anything! It's just that... well, ya know." You finish hurriedly.

"Ok. I get you. Just so we're on the same page." Yu takes a deep breath, and stuffs the rest of her breakfast in her mouth. "Mlets get our shit anm' get goin'." The two of you begin collecting your items.

As you zip up the backpack, you pause, your eyes catching on the knife. You take it out and hold it for a second, before clipping it to your belt. After all, your quirk is, well... you can't rely on your quirk right now.

"You ready?" Yu calls, already standing at the edge of the jungle. "Coming!" You reply, jogging over. Yu still wears your shirt, which you're fine with. You were quite overdressed for the oppressive humidity. "Alright, let's go." Yu replies, with a smile. As the two of you set off into the forest, Yu catches sight of the knife. "Not a bad idea," she admits. "I, of course, can use my quirk if someone gets all up in our face, but moving around without scratching my legs to shreds is gonna be next to impossible in this dense of a forest." She laughs. "You know, I normally hate travel. Home sweet home, right? But despite all this crap, I'm actually kinda looking forward to this expedition!"

"This is why I hate travellllll!" Yu cries. You've been traveling for about two hours, and so far it's been less than pleasant. Foliage constantly obstructs your path, strange birdcalls instill fear, clouds of insects seem to hound you relentlessly, and the constant humidity has you both sweating like dammed pigs. "Gaaah!" Yu yells in frustration, as she swats a swarm of gnats away. Momentarily distracted, you turn, and immediately trip over a root. Ugh. Your hooves weren't designed to traverse such uneven terrain. Speaking of which, they were feeling a little off...

"L-let's take a short break." You pant, shifting yourself into a sitting position against a tree. Yu slides to the ground across from you. You unclip the canteen from the pack, taking a swig of the coconut-water. When finished, you offer it to Yu, who does likewise.

"Aaahhh... that hits the spot." Yu wipes her mouth, passing back the canteen. As you stow it, she glances around. Catching your look, she apologizes. "Sorry, sorry. Wasn't trying to make you nervous. Being in the jungle, ya know? Kinda makes you anxious. You wonder if you're heading in the right direction. And, I keep feeling like someone's watching us. But..." she raises her arms, broadly gesturing to the surrounding area. "We are alone."

You nod understandingly. After all, your prey-instincts had made you all too familiar with the anxiety that accompanies the feeling of eyes on your back...

You freeze. Wait. Prey-instincts... the last time you'd felt them was when that villain had been tailing you. ...Was it possible...? You glance at Yu's ears. They still looked human, though maybe a bit more pointed than usual.

"Ren?" Yu asks, noticing the look on your face. "...Is something wrong?"

You say nothing, instead slowly rising to your feet, your hand on your knife. It was better to not take any chances. "We know you're here!" You shout. "Show yourself!"

Do you get a response?
