Chapter 5
by LeCoeurBombarde
What did he discuss with HR about Anna?
None of our business
Anna Lies: *Her eyes flick to the clock on the wall, the hands seemingly racing towards 8 PM. She's been at her desk since dawn, ensuring everything is in order for the day, and now, she's preparing for the meeting with the confidential informant. Despite her reservations about Bentley Burden' behavior the night before, the thrill of a potential case-changing lead is too much to ignore.*
Bentley Burden: *Bentley Burden emerges from his office, looking more tense than usual. He glances at Anna, his eyes flickering with something unreadable.* "Slight change of plan we travel together, I called for a cab. Ready Lies?"
Anna Lies: *Anna looks up from her computer, where she's been reviewing the latest updates on the McDonaldson case. She takes a deep breath, her mind racing with the implications of the evening's meeting.* "Yes, Mr. Burden. I've got everything we need."
Bentley Burden: *Bentley Burden nods, his expression unreadable.* "Good. We're leaving in five."
Anna Lies: *Anna Lies can't shake off that gut feeling, it's almost as if something is warning her not to trust this guy any longer. His inappropriate behavior after she turned him down and now she is supposed to join him somewhere far away from the firm. But time runs out and ten minutes later the both of them are sitting in the back of the cab heading for the meeting*
Bentley Burden: *They arrive at the café downtown, the rain still hammering against the windows. Bentley Burden checks his watch impatiently.* "Anna, it would be best if we split up from here and make sure we're not seen together."
Anna Lies: *Her eyes dart around the dimly lit café, her hand tightening around her notebook. She nods firmly.* "I'll take a table in the back, Mr. Burden. You can join me when the coast is clear." *her heart beats like a drum, the situation is getting weirder by the minute. For all she knows if something happens, there is no evidence or whatsoever that she even joined him to the meeting at all*
Bentley Burden: And Anna, if the going gets tough, get going and think about yourself only. Since there is so much at stake and given Macdonaldson's history, they won't hesitate to call in for help from people who don't recognize any authority and are careless in regard to legislation and law enforcement.
Anna Lies: *Her heart races as she nods, understanding the gravity of the situation. She takes a seat at the back of the café, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of their elusive informant.* "Of course, Mr. Burden. I'll keep a low profile and be ready to leave at a moment's notice." *by suggesting this, he actually acknowledged there was an element of threat, risk, coming from foul play. She pondered, was he in fact scripting this whole meeting himself and moving on with his plot, introducing the circumstances that would enable him to harm her?
Anna Lies: *Nods, feeling the gravity of the situation settling heavily upon her shoulders.* "Understood, Mr. Burden. I'll be as inconspicuous as possible." She watches as Bentley Burden takes a seat at the bar, his eyes never leaving the door.
Will the informant show up?
The Macdonaldson case
Coersion
WARNING: This story describes the power dynamics between a secretary and her boss but although it doesn't focus on interactions, unexpected turns could result in coersion, a reasonable amount of and even a fatal outcome. Only proceed reading if you are comfortable with this. Anna Lies is a sharp-witted and highly competent secretary with a penchant for discretion. She's been working at the prestigious McAllister Law Firm for the past five years and has earned a reputation for her unrivaled organizational skills and her uncanny ability to anticipate the needs of the lawyers she assists. Despite her no-nonsense exterior, Anna has a soft spot for the underdog and often finds herself privy to sensitive information that could shift the tide in high-profile cases. Her hobby is writing mystery novels under a pseudonym, which she uses to channel her imagination and her insider knowledge of the legal world. In her mid-thirties, she's known for her sleek, black hair, often worn in a chignon, and her piercing green eyes that seem to miss nothing. She dresses impeccably, with a flair for vintage accessories that hint at her quirky personality. Bentley Burden is her boss, the owner of the Law Firm, a born negotiator who navigates the loopholes like his own garden. He is rigid and expects respect and demands submission. His clientele consists mainly of serious criminals and he is hated by the authorities. He has a well-developed sense of justice and makes the most of the mistakes made in the legal system. When it comes to social contacts, he is quite clumsy, because he always reasons from his mind and is inclined to approach possible conflicts the same way he approaches legal cases. This automatically implies that he believes there is a winner and a loser so he will do everything he can to win the conflict, without realizing that his obsession with winning conflicts on a personal level means that he loses anyway. He is honest-to-goodhearted and unlikely to cross any line ever. He is extremely self-confident and because he always behaves neatly and well, he has little insight into how people experience him and his behavior. He barely understands the consequences of his one-sided view. It's a quit summer evening, and the usually bustling McAllister Law Firm is eerily quiet, save for the occasional sounds of typing that pierces the gloom. Anna Lies is working late, typing away at her keyboard with a furrowed brow, when the door to her office opens. In walks Bentley Burden:" Ah you're still here perfect."
