Does she like it? Maybe a little more than the alternative?
No.
Lara winced at the memory. In their drunken state they had been able to awkwardly laugh it off but there had been this terrible tension between them for days afterward till Lara had gotten fed up and sat down to discuss it with Sam. Lara explained that, while she was very flattered, she was strictly heterosexual and just didn't feel that way about Sam. It didn't go over well but it had been the right thing to do. After a few weeks they were back to their normal friendship shenanigans and Lara felt that they had successfully put the episode behind them. But every so often, now that she was aware of the significance, she would catch a glimpse of Sam watching her longingly when she thought Lara wasn't looking.
Looking up at her animated face now, Lara was able to put all that out of her mind. She was alive and so was her best friend. Things weren't so bad, she thought as she turned away from the fire and nestled her head in Sam's lap. She was soon sound asleep and Sam's narrative slowly teetering off as her attention shifted to Lara, sadly stroking her hair as Mathias watched curiously across the fire.
What awaits her in the morning?
