Chapter 9

Does he go with her?

No

This wasn't right. None of this had actually happened. Well, at least the part with Meloise. Everything else was a part of his history and, as such, he knew it well. He broke free from the illusion just in time to notice Meloise fiddling with his armor. She jumped back when she noticed his awareness.

"Aw, I made that especially for you. Why did you have to go and ruin that good dream?" She pouted she sat down.

"I love to look back on that memory; it was easy to notice that something was off." He has dropped his sword. Ark carefully bent down to get it while keeping her in eye sight.

"Relax," she held her hands up. "I won't be trying anything else. That was my most powerful spell. If you can break free from that, I don't stand a chance. Feel free to move along." Meloise lowered her hands as the door behind her opened.

"I'll say it now, though: Venus and I were the easy ones. It gets much more difficult from here on out," she sighed and took off her veil. "Such a shame to lose such a good man."

"Very bold to assume I'll lose," he shot back.

"The boldness is on your end. You'll break to someone. If not us peons, then definitely to the queen. But, for now, good luck." She seemed to be less-than-enthused about this outcome, but she didn't have much of a choice.

Before he could ask her about the queen, he found himself in the hallway with the doors closed. She really didn't want to see him anymore, did she? That left him with one singular way forward. He kept himself ready and trudged onwards.

He hoped she had been lying. It took quite a bit of willpower to break free from that illusion. Half of him had been tempted to give in. They difficulty made him wonder all the more as he approached the next room.

Who's next?
