There were no signs of the girl she was supposed to be babysitting. Instead, a PA system crackled into life, and Roxanne’s voice soon amplified around the entrance hall.

“Oh hey,” she said sweetly. “Nice to meet you, Skyler. I’m upstairs. Why don’t you come up?”

Skyler had a thin smile on her face. “That’s okay, Roxanne. I’ll wait down here until you’re ready. If you need anything, just give me a call.”

She was aware that the entire house was rigged with security cameras. Some of them were visible, whereas others were hidden. With this in mind, she knew she couldn’t afford to let Roxanne know that she knew about her plans. It was all about keeping things casual.

Instead, Skyler peered around the entrance hall like she was a newbie wowed by what she’d seen. She then turned toward the living room. Her peripheral vision scanned the floor the whole time.

And then she saw it.

The glint of tripwire. Even tripwire couldn’t avoid the bright lights above her head. As much as she wanted to see if it was rigged to anything, she casually stepped over it without breaking her step to make it look natural.

In the living room, she peered around again. Everything looked normal. At the same time, she caught a glimpse of the ceiling to look for anything that might fall on her. She also noticed the balcony that overlooked everything, clearly leading from one of the upper corridors.

Skyler figured that moving further into the house would only make her act look suspicious. Instead, she sat down on the sofa and waited. Roxanne already knew she was here. Once she realized she wasn’t going to move, she would have to come to her if she wanted this to go any further.
