Chapter 31 by BrainDerling
Ask to have your defeat posted to your trainer profile.
No way, Your no pokéslut!
"No way! I'm not looking to be a pokéslut!" You say defensively.
Brocks face softens "Good, I'm happy to hear it, your not a bad trainer and honestly with a bit more effort I'm sure you'll have your first badge in no time." he says gently, but his kind words only make you feel worse. You leave without another word and return to the pokémon center feeling discouraged.
The nurse Joy chats to you merrily as says as takes your pokémon but your not really listening, your deep in thought trying to come up with a plan to beat Brock. The simple answer would be to catch a few more pokémon the problem being your afraid to go back into the Bug Catchers forest and last you looked there was a few trainers who seemed to mill around dueling each on the edge of Route 3. The more you think about it, the more trapped you feel, you should have taken your time and caught more pokémon before you rushed off.
You still don't have a plan by the time your pokémon are fully healed and you leave the pokémon center, you walk around the town half the day racking your brain for a solution and raging internally about the inequality female trainers suffer under. You still stumped by lunch time and your brain is starting to hurt so you buy a few wrapped sandwiches from the mart and sit down in the grass to have lunch. You let Chance out of his ball so you can share your lunch with him, you feel a little guilty that you didn't check on him sooner, but Chance seems healthy and happy as ever.
You watch Chance play as you sullenly eat and toss crumbs to him when a Pidgey that's flying overhead shits directly onto your half finished sandwich! You discard the sandwich away in frustration and shake your first at the Pidgey as it lands on a nearby rooftop.
Then it hits you! the Pidgey isn't a new problem! It's the solution to you current problem! You've never thought much of Pidgey, everyone in Pallet is used to them. Pidgey are far too timid be a threat to people but you've have seen them squabble with wild Rattata over food loads of times, and that's just what you need right now, a Pokémon for your Rattata to squabble with. Your beaming with pride at your own brilliant idea as you scatter some bread crumbs about, then you start to groan as Chance eats your bait.
"Chance, I'm sure you don't understand, but I really screwed up and I need you to get stronger so you can protect me, so please don't eat the breadcrumbs." You complain.
Your not even sure how ones trains a Rattata not eat bread crumbs but thankfully Chance either understands what you want or is simply too full already. Regardless of his reasoning Chance is soon sitting in the grass surrounded by a few piles of breadcrumbs while you wait a short distance away. Your plan works, thought it works much differently then you'd imagined, in your mind a single Pidgey would swoop down from the sky and polity agree to a battle, the reality is the wild Pidgey just want the food, and when Chance dashes at them they simply flee up into the air. For the next several minutes you giggle as Chance dashes about frantically in an comical attempt to protect the scattered bread crumbs from a dozen or more Pidgey. Its clear there isn't going to be a real battle, and your thinking about calling Chance off so the Pidgey can enjoy the bread when you notice Chance's motions becoming less frantic, and he seems to be getting better at anticipating the Pidgey while there still up in the air.
While you watch Chance defend the food it become increasingly clear that while this may not be the typical way to train a pokémon its definitely working. There is nearly twenty Pidgey flapping around now but despite there growing numbers its been a while since your Rattata let one land much less let one eat a single breadcrumb. You smile, lean back in the grass, and watch the show.
The Pidgey are growing more and more annoyed. There calls grow more and more shrill and agitated as Chance gets closer and closer to making contact each time one tries to land. The whole scene seems humorous and lighthearted until Chance manages to make contact with one, then all hell breaks lose. The Pidgey start to dive at Chance and you lose sight of him behind all the wings. Cursing yourself for putting Chance in harms way again you push yourself to run as fast as you can towards your friend hoping you make it in time to save him. Half way there you look up and stop in disbelief at what you see.
Chance is moving fast! really fast! much faster then you've seen him move before, thought not all the time, but rather each time your sure a Pidgey is about to get him Chance seems to almost disappear for a moment before you spot him colliding with the encroaching bird. You stand with your mouth agape in amazement as Chance not only manages to defend himself while attacking the swarming Pidgey back, but he is somehow still managing to guard all the breadcrumbs at the same time. The angry Pidgey don't give up until over half of them are too injured to fly, several of them are simply laying motionless in the grass.
"Come here Chance, you did great." you call out.
Other then breathing heavily as he makes his way over to you Chance looks unharmed, "Come on, lets get you back to the pokémon center." you say pulling out his ball, then your mouth hangs open when Chance disobeys you for the first time and rushes between your legs to stop you recalling him, but you giggle when you see he is just after the last sandwich.
"Your right buddy, you did great, you earned it, we will get you fixed up after." you giggle.
You watch Chance drag the sandwich out of your bag and slowly unwrap it with his teeth, then instead of eating as you accept it he starts to pick of little bites and scatter them around himself in the grass with a intensity you've never seen him display before.
"Chance is this because I said I needed you to get strong enough to protect me?"
Chance doesn't answer you because he's a pokémon, instead Chance just keeps spreading breadcrumbs in the grass instead of eating them like he wants to.
Do you let Chance keep pushing himself?
