‘What ELSE could possibly work as a code name, considering the subject matter?’ Doctor List continued pondering in his head. He couldn’t quite find the right pun to capture the essence of the current research topic: crossbreeding the Maximoff Twins. Before he could wrack his mind further—

List jerked his head toward the sound as soon as he heard the glass shattering. The experiment!

BLRRR! BLRRR! BLRRR!

An incredibly insistent warning began blaring from the medical console.

Doctor List sprinted back over to the surgical interface.

‘VerDAMMT!’ List cursed himself. Where the Maximoff Petri dish should’ve been, shards and splinters of glass surrounded the blackened, splattered, smoking embryo culture. Smoke and the occasional red spark of hex energy were still emanating from the glass-littered smoulder.

This was *not* good. ‘Nicht so gut at all,’ List thought to himself. None of his computer trials had predicted this.

‘What Happened?!’ List wondered as he began combing back through the recording of the fertilisation, beads of sweat dotting his brow.

It was Wanda’s oocyte. The video showed it clear as day— List had expected her egg to repulse a large number of potential fertilisers; that’s one more reason why Pietro’s hyperactive sperm would be perfectly suited here… Apparently Wanda’s egg disagreed. The video showed her egg being swarmed by tadpoles trying to fertilise it. The ovum began giving off brighter and brighter red, hex energy as the swimmers tried harder and harder to penetrate it, until the miniature explosion that wrecked any hopes of a fertilised embryo. Apparently Wanda’s egg wanted *Nothing* to do with being fertilised by Pietro’s swimmers.

‘Baron Strucker won’t like that news at all…’ Doctor List began worrying internally. ‘What other possible avenues for research can I possibly offer him?? We don’t even have any more of Wanda’s egg cells! If we wanted more we’d have to—’ And that’s when List realised it.

“If in-vitro fertilisation failed, then perhaps we consider the more.. Natural path,” Doctor List announced to himself and the smouldering remains of the first trial. “Baron Strucker had no problems with crossbreeding the Twins’ sex cells. Surely he won’t mind pushing the line a bit farther… For HYDRA. I’ll inform him of the new direction for research tomorrow.”
