You race back up the stairs, press the red button, thankfully it opens, then you run back to the entry hall, where you sit down, breathing heavily.
Maybe you'll try again later. Maybe you'll spend the night in Mr. Hewitt's master bedroom sleeping in one of his nightgowns.
