Chapter 37 by Hellena

We're not REALLY doing a college course chapter, are we?

No, obviously not, that's just a taste of what she's wasting time on.

You walk out of your class feeling like a wiser... No, okay, that's a complete lie. Today's class was pretty much a bust, you were too distracted to really engage with the lesson plan instead of your own personal issues.

But, courtesy of your decision to actually study the supporting information, at least you weren't completely lost - you got the gist of what the professor was trying to say, and you think that you'll be able to work our the details on your own time. Grade: Protected.

That said, you were still pretty glad to be free on your own terms now; you're practically running to the cafeteria with your laptop. Maybe studying demonology in public wasn't your most brilliant of ideas, but damn it - you were hungry, and you didn't need hunger clouding your mind right now. It's not like anyone was going to pay attention to what you were doing anyway.

Which just left you with one more problem now... Actually getting reliable information on demons. But hey, the web has everything these days, right?

The web does, in fact, have everything these days. And Ashley is, in fact, a succubae. Add those two facts together...

And you're sifting through historic church rumors, conspiracy theories, "true fanatic information resources", news clippings, moralizing sermons, and about a few hundred thousand pieces of erotic fiction.

Perhaps you hadn't given enough weight to this fact beforehand, but succubae were popular. Not just post-actual-demons, but they were one of the most iconic of demons in the beforetimes as well. And none of that information was scrubbed. You had been afraid that you wouldn't be able to find reliable information, but what you should have worried about was that you were going to be buried under a mountain of irrelevant shit. At least anyone watching probably thought you were browsing for porn instead of demons, a thought which amused you.

But then, as you're taking a drink back to your room, it hits you; this is post-actual-demons, and you do know of some actual succubae. You can sift out some 90% of the cruft by limiting your searches to information about "The Queen of Las Vegas", or "The Las Vegas Mayoral Race" and various other such searches. You'd be getting a lot of unnecessary biopics and political speculation, but at least a few journalists or observers had probably done a 'splainer or two on what a succubae actually was.

Which were likely to be trash or outright disinformation, admittedly. To say there was a lot of clickbait around the race was an understatement, and there was a lot of hysteria around the first demon to run for office. But it would be a starting point. Some of them would cite actual sources, which you could use to find and evaluate additional sources, and let you put some of those College Girl skills to use instead of relying on wikipedia like the unwashed masses. Not that you could, you'd already checked the edit war raging there.

A couple of hours later, and you'd come to three different conclusions.

First, Queen Pulchramalum was flipping amazing, and you wish you had a succubus like her for a professor. She was a serious and studious woman who was revitalizing Las Vegas through the catalyst of these uncertain times, and with her firm rule, it was likely Las Vegas was going to be the new New York. You're half-tempted to move out there yourself, especially considering how well-equipped she was to handle the new dangers and opportunities that demons created.

Except, Second, her daughter seemed like something out of a horror show, and you're desperately glad that Ashley wasn't that kind of monster. You can tell pretty readily that most of the things you hear about her are just Fanatic disinformation - that stuff about how she drained the lives of a hundred men in a single day in New York an obvious fabrication, for instance - but... Yeah, while her mom had clearly been pulling strings, there's enough testimony and questionable stories to prove she'd been killing a fair number of people, and not always discreetly. The only question was whether it was for sport, or as some kind of demon thing. Nothing you had seen suggested that Ashley was murdering anyone, though, so rumors that it was necessary of succubae to survive was probably just another speciest rumor.

And lastly... You were starting to wonder if you'd been a bit too harsh on Ms. Devlin. Because yeah, she had totally ruined what should have been one of your favorite classes, was buying a bunch of souls, and made a mockery of professional conduct, but... Well, for something greater than human, she was doing a remarkable job of playing by human rules. You read about some of the other demons that Queen Pulchramalum had put down, and they were responsible for some pretty twisted horror shows - orgies of blood and **** against a helpless population, brainwashing people to give them fake lives and backstories to act in a living play, driving humans to mass ****, and organizing gluttonous bacchanals that featured every vice imaginable. Ashley wasn't doing anything that people didn't ask for, and filling up the school with lust... Well, this was a college, right? Maybe it would be a bit... Different, than it had been, but it wasn't changing the college experience that much.

...Yeah, looking at your three conclusions, you recognized that you'd gotten a bit sidetracked. But not overwhelmingly so; you'd drawn up a list of recurring or plausible succubae traits, and sources mentioned by credible publications or people with relevant credentials. Some of them were old occult texts; some of them were "black books" linked to Fanatics; some of them were even put out by demon worshippers, or cutting edge scientific journals. Using this, you're pretty sure that tomorrow should be more than enough to ease up the information asymmetry between you and Ashley. Ideally, you'd like to work out a way to maintain your free will around her, but... Just knowing what you should worry about would go a long way to finding the start of a plan.

But for now, you were going to go and see your bestie; it was around six, so she should be full of nerves right about now.

A date, a date, a very important date! But is there time for anything else?
