They rode onward, through the pass and down into a small valley amidst the hills. Twilight was coming on and the sun was nearly set as they entered under the trees. "Perhaps we shall see their fires," Ruven mused. "The trail leads this way...how far could those bandits range?"

"I do not know," Oshin said tersely. "They harry many valleys, to be sure...but we must be close now..."

There was a snap, and a bolt from an unseen crossbow whirred from the bushes [Strike: 7 vs. AC 15], missing Oshin's head by inches. As he whirled toward the direction from which it had flown, he saw a man in the bushes reload his bow [Reload] before [Hide: 9 vs. Perception DCs 15/17] attempting to fade back into the bushes. But Oshin spurred his horse and, with a cry, rode down on him [Command - Stride], crashing into the woods to [Strike: 13 vs. AC 15] thrash the bushes with his club. He [Strike: 6 vs. AC 15] swung again, his horse rearing, seeking his quarry.

As Ruven moved to follow him, a bolt from another hidden attacker flew toward him [Strike: 10 vs. AC 12], missing him only through luck. Ruven snarled as Bethtali screamed, and whirled to seek out the man. He saw two others moving to the sides now, and caught a glimpse of motion [Reload] before [Sneak: 17 vs. Perception DC 15] losing the man who'd loosed on him.

"Cowards!" he bellowed, unsheathing his blade [Interact]. "Come, taste of a real warrior's steel!" He spurred Nightwind [Command - Stride] and, keeping one arm wrapped firmly around the terrified woman on his saddle, rode through the underbrush upon one of the men who was preparing to loose. His blade glowed and flashed [Strike: 24 vs. AC 15, 7 S 1 spirit], striking the man through the heart and leaving him to gurgle out. The song of the blade filled the air as the remaining bandit, with a cry, loosed a bolt at Ruven [Strike: 26 vs. AC 14, crit! for 4 P], the quarrel lancing into the huge man's shoulder and making him grunt in pain. The man reloaded [Reload] and fled into the brush [Sneak: 7 vs. Perception DC 15/17], but made such noise in his flight that his position was plain.

The man Oshin had charged, meanwhile, raised his crossbow and attempted to loose, but Oshin [Reactive Strike: 14 vs. AC 15] swung down at him and he was **** to [Strike: 11 vs. AC 16] jerk his arm out of the way, spoiling his shot. Yanking out a dagger [Interact], the bandit lunged at Oshin with a snarl [Strike: 20 vs. AC 16, 6 S], stabbing into his leg and making the warrior gasp in pain. Bleeding, Oshin swung desperately again [Strike: 21 vs. AC 15, 9 B], and this time in his fury he felled the man. Wheeling his horse, he called to Ruven, "We should fall back! There are too many of them!" He galloped toward the man who'd shot Ruven [Command - Stride], closing the gap and [Strike: 18 vs. AC 13, 6 B] clubbing him as he fled.

Even as he spoke the hidden man loosed a quarrel [Strike: 23 vs. AC 12, crit! for 6 P] that flew into Ruven's back, making the huge man cry out in pain. The man reloaded [Reload] and, not caring for his safety, loosed again [Strike: 21 vs. AC 14, crit! for 12 P] and Ruven crashed from his horse to the ground, nearly carrying Bethtali with him as she screamed. He thudded earthward, and all became darkness.
