Chapter 9 by gramana gramana

What's next?

Nikki finally helps

Muffled, Nikki's phone buzzed. It took a few moments for her to hear it; her desk was covered in paperwork and documents, today necessitating a lot of research of the various cases. It was a bit of time before she recognised the regular buzzing.

"What..." she murmured.

She lifted up a folder, and blinked to see a blouse balled up beneath it.

"Huh? How did that..." Nikki murmured.

She pushed it aside. Below it, her phone was beeping as it received another frantic text; Nikki blinked, and reached for it. She brushed away a pair of panties apparently draped over it.

"Wait, when did they get on my - huh, are those Jen's?" she said.

Then she opened her phone. There were a few dozen, increasingly all-caps messages from Jennifer; Nikki fired a quick 'cool off!' back, before scrolling back. Then she looked over her shoulder; Jennifer was in her office, sat very primly behind her desk, for some reason back in Jen mode. She was waving a little bit frantically.

"If it's such a big deal, you just had to come out and call me," Nikki mumbled to herself. Still, she carefully marked her place in her files, slipped the random garments in her desk drawer to join the pants she'd found earlier, and got up.

Jennifer waved a little more urgently. Frowning, Nikki walking happily into her office, half-curious what had gotten her friend in such a panic.

"Okay, no questions," Jennifer said. She was still sat in place, not even standing to welcome her in, clutching one arm over her suit jacket to keep it shut. It wasn't like her to be so uptight, Nikki reflected. "I need you to get me a spare shirt, and pair of pants, in the next five minutes before my meeting."

"Spill something?" Nikki said. "No one'll judge if they see you with a bit of coffee on your shirt."

"I said no questions!" Jennifer said, voice raising in pitch slightly. Nikki blinked.

"Huh. I mean, good day for it," Nikki said. "Weirdest thing's been happening - someone's been leaving their clothes on my desk all day. First some pants, then their underwear, and a shirt."

Jennifer blinked.

"No idea what they're doing," Nikki said.

"Hey, I think those are mine," Jennifer said.

"Why would they be yours?" Nikki said.

She paused. Then, without warning, moved forwards to crane her head over Jennifer's desk; Jennifer squeaked, though drew a hand in over her core all too late, and not even that was enough to hide her bare thighs, nor the clear lack of anything on below her jacket - not even the trailing lower edge of a shirt.

Nikki hesitated.

"Huh. I guess that explains where they came from," Nikki said. "Wait, why did you leave your stuff on my desk? If you wanted to work naked, way safer to keep them close at hand, you know?"

"I'm not- why does everyone think that's what I'm doing?!" Jennifer said. "I swear I never..."

Her voice trailed off. Wait. Nikki's desk. That was where she'd left...

"Valkyrie," Jennifer muttered. "Of course. That makes sense. Urgh."

"What?" Nikki said.

"That rock she gave me," Jennifer said. "She called it a summoning stone, said I just had to say something to bring it. If you mentioned any clothes, I guess it summoned the ones I owned to your desk."

"That paperweight?" Nikki said. "Huh. neat."

"Easy for you to say!" Jennifer said. She fidgeted. "So, can you please bring everything it summoned back in here? I've been called to a meeting in five and I really want to go there in more than just a jacket."

"I mean, She-Hulk could pull it off," Nikki said.

"Nikki!"

"On it!" Nikki said.

She hurried out, opening the draw where she'd stashed all the clothes whose appearances had so baffled her. She paused for a moment to pick up the Asgardian story, turning it over in her hand for a moment, slightly impressed.

"Nikki!" Jennifer called, again.

Oh, right, slight time limit. Nikki pocketed it, and walked quickly back to Jennifer's office, shutting the door behind her. She lay the stray garments on the desk - blushing, Jennifer reached forward to grab her panties first, then paused.

"Er. Could you stand between me and the wall?" Jennifer said, gesturing at the glass pane that opened up onto the rest of the floor. "Gonna need to take this off to put my shirt on, and really not looking to flash everyone."

"Got it," Nikki said.

She moved into position, walking around until she was more behind the desk, catching a glimpse of Jennifer with black panties around her knees, and an open jacket baring her cleavage, before Jen quickly tried to hide behind her arms.

"And turn around!" Jennifer said, face flushed.

"Fine, fine," Nikki said.

Behind her, Jennifer fumbled with her clothes, tugging her panties all the way up, and stepping into her pants, before casting a nervous glance up at Nikki. She shuffled sideways, trying to hide as best she could as she slipped off her jacket. Instinct made her cross an arm over her breasts, all too uncomfortable being topless in a room with glass walls. She slipped her bra over her shoulders, and then quickly pulled on her shirt before doing it up, relaxing only when her blouse was on.

She fiddled with the clasp through her shirt, tugging on the cups gently to adjust, before quickly tugging up her pants. She breathed a sigh of relief, donning her jacket at last.

"Okay," Jennifer said. "Can I have the stone back? In retrospect, maybe handing a magical artifact out was a bad idea."

"Sure," Nikki said. She drew it out of her pocket, turning around again to put it down on Jennifer's desk. "So, what, do I just have to say shir-"

"Nuh-uh, don't finish that word!" Jen said, interrupting quickly.

She looked down at herself, as if just to make sure her top hadn't vanished again. Glad to see she was still fully dressed, Jennifer shifted, returning to her more work-suitable She-Hulk form. Grimacing, she tugged on her bra again, adjusting the fit of her outfit.

"Thanks," Jennifer said, at last. She managed a genuine smile. "Here's hoping the rest of the day goes a bit smoother. And that there are no more cameos, I mean seriously."

"Good luck," Nikki said. "If you want to reach me, I'll be neck deep in statements."

"Oof. Good luck," Jen said. "Busy day for all of us huh?"

Jennifer's computer beeped; an alert had been added to her calendar. She sighed.

"And that's me due to go to the meeting," Jennifer said. "Talk later?"

"You betcha," Nikki said.

She waved playfully as Jennifer pushed herself up out of her desk. Jen was still a little awkward walking, but soon got into the swing, glad of the return of her clothes. As she went away, Nikki cast a speculative glanced down at the summoning stone.

"Impressive little thing," she said. She grimaced. "But yeah. Probably best you to keep you in here, where no one accidentally uses you again."

As Jen vanished down the hallway, Nikki unlocked one of Jen's drawers, and carefully put the stone inside it. She sighed, a moment from locking the drawer and leaving the office to head back to work.

"Still, could've been worse I guess," Nikki said. "At least you didn't take her whole outfit."

And as the drawer closed, Nikki missed the stone sparkling for the latest time, and a pile of clothes appearing atop it.
