Chapter 9 by GyroscopicGraphite GyroscopicGraphite

Fast forward to;

Nighttime at Fortuna mansion

Kaguya was about to get ready for bedtime, a largely unchanged ritual throughout most of her life. Since her classes didn't start until 08:00 and she lived a short walk away from the university, she woke up at 07:00, and so she went to bed at 22:00 in order to get enough sleep.

Before that however, was her personal time. Any homework, studying, or research she needed to do was done alongside her responsibilities on the student council, meaning she often stayed until approximately 19:00 at the place. It also meant that once she got home, all she had left was free time. Unlike most people, however, who use their time to lounge around and scroll through their phone, Kaguya spends her extra time on things like literature and science, often doing more studying for pleasure than for business and school.

Her father, Liximus Fortuna, often told her that she was a bright child with a bright future. He wasn't home much during the average day, but he made sure to make time for her during her most important moments, and on the rare occasion he wasn't, he always made it up to her. He always made sure she knew how proud he was of her. She wanted to keep her father proud, and so as he said she should time and time again, she never let a moment go to waste. She lived every day with a purpose in mind, furthering her knowledge, or keeping her mind and body healthy.

To that end, she kept a journal of sorts, marking down important events of that day before she prepared to end it, today being no exception. Of course, today had a particular moment of intrest, thanks to Jehnova and his shenanigans. She did some extra research on the validity of his claims, finding nothing backed by a reputable source, confirming her suspicions. Not a single known instance of a device capable of seamlessly putting someone to sleep like that existed. Whatever that man had gotten his hands on was something that remained a mystery to her, and the rest of the scientific world, and she was eager to see what else it could do.

Journal 10/15/2061: Today was nothing unusual for the most part. Shukufuku and Chanceox circled back to their debate over which colors of the rainbow could beat each other in a fight, which somehow is per the course for those buffons. Of course, they still got the work done somehow, which will always make me able to appreciate them for all their ridiculous antics.

The intriguing bit however, comes from the janitor, Mr. Jehnova, who has gotten his hands on quite the odd device. They resemble some form of light-up glasses, like the ones Chanceox brought over to the student council room back in March, yet these ones were somehow even gaudier. At first I believed I was observing some form of mid-life crisis, but then he said he'd show me a 'special trick', to which I understandably raised a eyebrow, both proverbially and literally. Next thing I know, he pushes a button on his phone and suddenly, I awaken with no memory of anything in between. He made up some nonsense about how his new toy was able to put people to sleep, sweeping it under the rug as some psycological phenomena. He must not be aware of my experience in the subject, and taking into account the records, his resume, and what he bit and pieces of his life I've managed to coax out of him, he likely doesn't have any of his own.

The general nervousness of his behavior, the few drops of sweat on his forehead, the way he looked around behind the glasses as though he was avoiding eye contact, and the almost excessive showmanship leads me to the conclusion that he wasn't fully sure his device would work. Doing some research revealed nothing beyond what I had already suspected; such a strange yet powerful gadget did not exist, and any theoretical mechanisims would have to vastly more complex than simple glowing glasses, and far too heavy to comfortably wear on one's face. Therefore, one of two possibilities must be the case;

1) Jehnova is far more intelligent than anyone knows, and has simply been playing the rest of the world for fools. Highly unlikely.

2) Someone else has manufactured the ridiculous spectacles for Jehnova, opening a frankly concerning number of avenues about who has hidden themselves from the world, what they are capable of, and their motives.

In the coming days, I shall attempt to pry more imformation out of him, although direct confrontation will certainly result in him hiding the glasses away, and so I shall play along for the time being. I do not believe myself to be in any danger for the moment, and so I will keep it as a secret, although it is unlikely most would believe me.

-End of entry-

The next day...
