Chapter 10 by GyroscopicGraphite GyroscopicGraphite

The next day...

Let the games begin.

Same as yesterday, the janitor watched as the wealthy teenagers and the adults with degrees washed through the hallways, flowing out to wherever they needed to go. And just the same, the Moon Princess found and greeted him once more. Unlike before, however, the pair both had particualr goals in mind. Jehnova was going to make his first gambit, trying to get her where he wanted her to be. Kaguya Fortuna was almost enthusiastic to see if she could uncover the secrets he was most certainly hiding. As they exchanged the usual pleasantries, they took notice of each other's poorly-masked determination and exitcement, coming to the seperate yet mutual understanding; today was going to be quite an eventful one.

Jehnova made the first move. "Now then, I believe you wanted to see these again?" he said, pulling out and putting on the glasses.

"Ahh yes, those," she replied, mind already analyzing the spectacles with as much detail as her eyes could take in. She had to play her cards with as near to perfection as she could. If she displayed too little interest, he might look for someone else to experiment with. Too much interest, and he might think she's onto his tricks. This isn't the kind of game you can study, is it, Mr. Jehnova? she thought to herself. She had never seen something like this before. This wasn't a test with predefined curriculum, or a game one could learn by simply studying tactics. No, this was something unique, something Kaguya had never seem before, and she wanted to see just what would happen next.

So too, did Jehnova feel a sense of exhilaration at the dance of wits the pair now engaged in. The days had started to become stagnant over the years, and in recent times, the closest thing to a change was Kaguya, who had taken an interest in his meager life. Even then, their meeting never lasted more than a few minutes before the return to the same worn-out day. He never quite understood the sudden intrique she had for him, but no matter what, she always felt distant, like a doctor examining a patient rather than a proper conversation.

But now? He could tell, he had found something special in that unassuming cardboard box, and even the Moon Princess herself agreed. Now the barrier between the two had shrunken, and, for at least a short moment, they would be on even ground. He expected her to gain the upper hand, sure, but he wasn't going to make it easy.

For the time being, he wanted to test the trigger he had put in her yesterday. He cleared his throat and said "I humbly request that we move to the classroom for the moment," gesturing to the room to the right.

"Alright then, let's go," she responded without change in her demeanor or expression, although internally she was a tad bit upset. Did he really think he needed to be so formal with her? Was that the impression she gave off? It was such a perfectly normal request anyways, he could have asked any other day and gotten the same result. Come to think of it, she couldn't remember an instance of him ever asking like that before. She set the thought aside for the moment, proceeding into the classroom.

The desks were arranged not in a typical classroom fashion, but more like a flower, with pairs of desks facing each other to make petals organized around a center such that they formed a circle. "One of these, eh?" Jehnova remarked. He had seen this before. It was apparently an exercise for practicing civilized debating. The people on the exterior would rotate and discuss a topic with the people on the interior. In other words, a design built to house a battle of minds.

And when in Rome...
