After breakfast, Jess walks with you across campus, leading you to the main academic building with the classrooms. “So, what was home like?” Jess asks, striking up casual conversation.
Nate already filled Jess in about how you ended up at St. Hartley’s. You know, psycho religious mother who kicked you off to (what mom thought was) a boarding school for juvenile delinquents.
“It was fine,” you say, shrugging. “A bit stifling.” Jess nods and doesn’t pry further. “Well, I’m the youngest of three sisters. They came to St. Hartley’s, too. They both played on the polo team.”
Polo? Like, horses and mallets? Back in your previous high school, there was football, track and field, or basketball. That was it. But here? Riding on horses, giant swimming pools… fencing?
“Oh, shit,” Jess says as you approach the classroom door. She watches an attractive couple walk into the room together. A bombshell blonde girl and her muscled, dopey-eyed boyfriend.
“Trouble?” you ask. Jess shakes her head and sighs. “Sabrina and Callum. They aren’t trouble, really. Just obnoxious. And stupid. Very, very stupid.” Jess pats your back. “Good luck in there.”
