A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Heading towards the door, Spencer took a deep breath, hoping for the best. Upon answering it, he Evelyn waiting, wearing jeans, a shirt, and a new pixie-style hair cut.

"Hey Spence." She said with a beaming smile.

"Hey. This is new."

"Not the only thing new." Evelyn motioned to Spencer's driveway, so he looked to her Toyota Camry.

"Oh. Very nice."

"Thanks. Figure I may as well blend in at school drop off."

"Guess so. So wanna come in?"

"Yeah."

He then led Evelyn inside to his in-laws. Upon seeing Evelyn, Abigail smiled and said "Hello dear."

"Hey guys."

"So, this is Evelyn." Spencer said.

"Abigail."

"Geoff."

"Pleasure to meet you two." Evelyn then looked to the Monopoly board. "Still playing?"

Spencer shrugged. "Well they are. I think I'm out."

"Yeah you're out Dad." Amy interjected.

"How about we call it for now and have lunch?" Abigail stated.

"Sounds like a plan. My competitive side might not be a good first impression." Evelyn jested, making Spencer's heart stop for a second as he looked to his in-laws for a reaction. To his relief, Abigail smiled.

"Well honesty is." She replied.

"Exactly." Evelyn gave a careless shrug.

"So, you hungry?"

"Sure. Do you want any help?"

"No I'm fine dear. You sit down."

"Right." Evelyn took a seat at Spencer's table as Amy and Spencer cleared up the Monopoly board.

"So, how are you Evelyn?" Geoff asked.

"Good." She proceeded to bring the Geoff and Amy up to date whilst Spencer packed up the Monopoly board. Once he was done, Spencer circled around the kitchen to check on Abigail, finding her with a smile on her face. Once done, he heads back to the table, to hear Evelyn say "Yeah he's got the boys this weekend. Probably doing something outdoorsy."

"Fishing?"

"Yeah, they like fishing."

"Like someone I know." Spencer interjects as he pats Geoff's back.

"Guilty as charged."

"That or they're pestering him to shoot animals."

Geoff gave Evelyn a blank stare as Spencer felt a pang of anxiety. He wasn't exactly the biggest fan of firearms, but both Geoff and Abigail despised them.

"Boys will be boys." Evelyn jested.

"I mean I suppose it has to get on the plate somehow." Geoff added a nervous chuckle at the end of his statement.

"Plus my ex was in the Marines, so they'll jump at any excuse to dress up in camo and carry guns."

"Well, I suppose so long they do it responsibly..."

Abigail then came in with the meal, interrupting the conversation, much to Spencer's relief. Part of him had wished he'd talked to Evelyn about being a little more careful with what she said. Then again, his parents-in-law seem to wear gleeful expressions. His brain had met this new situation with a cocktail of second-guessing and anxiety he'd brewed, and now he feared what would happen next whilst hoping he was just merely exaggerating.
