Chapter 88

Will Spencer cope?
Maybe
Spencer tried his best to enjoy the rest of the day, but he couldn't help but wonder if he really loved Evelyn. His mind started running in circles. Maybe he didn't love Evelyn, but maybe that was just grief he felt for Kirstin. Maybe he did love her, but maybe that was just a reaction to the fact she had broken the six years of celibacy. Maybe he could love again, but could he love like he did all those years ago?
He tried his best to take solace in the fact that both Geoff and Abigail seemed to be taking things in stride, much like Amy had throughout the last month. Then again, he knew all too well that on the inside, they must be feeling conflicted. Evelyn is exactly where they're daughter should be. There were also nagging similarities between the two. Evelyn didn't shy about talking about work, although she tended to find a way to put a more positive spin on it whereas Kirstin would rather vent. He also observed how much more blunt Evelyn could be, cursing throughout the one round of Monolopy they played, her playstyle much more rash and impulsive than Kirstin 's.
Evelyn could sense the unease, and she understood it. At least as much as she could anyway. Spencer would always love Kirstin, no matter what was happening or who he was with. All she wanted to do was hug him and tell him it'd all be fine, but she feared how he'd take that with his in-laws around. It sunk on her that maybe things between them were fleeting, and it hurt to think she might lose him. Spencer had been a shining beacon and she was starting to feel more and more that she truly loved him, more so than she had anyone else in a long time.
After dinner, Evelyn decided to call it a night. She drove in her new car, she wondered what sort of conversation the in-laws would have with Spencer. Maybe they liked her, or maybe they didn't. Maybe his in-laws smiles were just a facade, or maybe they were genuine. Maybe he could love again, but could he love like he did all those years ago?
That question kept her up all night, and she was sure she was not alone in that.
