Bill sat on the edge of the bed and waited.
Rebecca stayed where she was, hands folded in her lap, and began.
“It started with Taylor.”
She kept her voice even, as if reading from a list she had already rehearsed in her head.
“He works at the gym on Turner Street. You and I both used to go there, before you switched to the one closer to the office. He spotted for me a few times on the free weights. Harmless at first. Then the comments started—about how I looked, how I moved, how my husband must be a lucky man. I laughed them off. I told myself it was just gym talk.”
Bill said nothing. His eyes stayed on her face.
“One night I stayed later than usual. The place was almost empty. He offered to help me with a stretch that had been bothering my hip. It turned into more than a stretch. He had me against the mirror in the stretching room. We didn’t have sex that first time, but his hands were under my shirt and my leggings were pulled down and I let it happen. I drove home after and sat in the driveway for twenty minutes trying to decide whether to tell you. I didn’t.”
She swallowed.
“It became regular after that. His car, the empty studio after closing, once in the family restroom when the gym was still open. I told myself I could stop whenever I wanted. I didn’t stop.”
Bill’s hands were flat on his thighs. He hadn’t moved.
“Lavon came later,” Rebecca continued. “He’s the one who handles commercial accounts at the firm across from yours. You introduced us at that mixer last spring. He asked for my number under the excuse of a possible referral. The referral never happened. The texts did. He was more direct than Taylor. He told me exactly what he wanted and when. I met him at a hotel off the interstate three times before I admitted to myself that it wasn’t going to be a one-time mistake. He’s… heavier. More demanding. He likes to leave marks. He likes to hear me say things about you while he’s inside me.”
Her voice stayed level, but a faint flush had risen in her cheeks.
“Debo is the most recent. He used to do some of the evening security shifts at the office park when the company was short-staffed last year. You probably don’t remember him. I do. He remembered me. He showed up at the house one afternoon when you were at work. He didn’t force his way in. He just stood there and told me he knew about Taylor and Lavon, and that he was collecting what he considered interest. I should have closed the door. I didn’t. He was inside me within ten minutes. He’s the roughest of the three. He’s also the one who talks the most about you—about what kind of man lets this happen, about how I should go home and kiss you with his cum still in me. I’ve seen him four times. The last time was nine days ago.”
Rebecca finally looked down at her hands.
“That’s the truth. All of it. I accepted the first proposition. I continued with all three. I kept the pictures and the messages. I came home afterward and ate dinner with you and went to bed beside you and said nothing. I’m prepared for whatever you need to do now—leave, yell, ask for a divorce, whatever it is. I just didn’t want to keep lying once you asked.”
The room was very quiet.
Bill sat still for a long time. When he spoke, his voice was rough but controlled.
“Nine days ago.”
“Yes.”
“In our house?”
“No. His place. He’s only been inside this house once, and we didn’t… it didn’t go that far that day. Everything else has been elsewhere.”
Bill nodded once, as if filing the detail away. He stared at the far wall.
“Do you love any of them?”
“No.”
“Do you love me?”
Rebecca’s answer came without hesitation. “Yes.”
“Then why?”
She was quiet for several seconds. “Because it felt good. Because they wanted me in a way that was simple and physical and didn’t ask for anything except my body. Because after the first time it became easier to say yes than to explain why I had said yes before. I know how that sounds. I know it doesn’t excuse anything.”
Bill stood up. He walked to the window, looked out at the dark street for a while, then turned back.
“I need the phone.”
Rebecca unlocked it and handed it over without argument. Bill sat back down and began scrolling. He did not hide what he was doing. He opened the photo album, the message threads, the videos. Rebecca watched his face in profile while the light from the screen moved across it. She saw the exact moment he reached the first video with Debo. His jaw flexed, but he kept watching.
After a long time he locked the phone and set it on the bed between them.
“I’m not leaving tonight,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow. But tonight I’m staying. And you’re going to answer every question I still have.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Okay.”
Bill looked at her for a long moment. The anger was there, and the hurt, and underneath both something harder to name.
“Start with Taylor,” he said. “Tell me the first time again. Slower. Don’t leave anything out.”
Rebecca took a breath, and did.
