What Waits Inside?
New Dorm Mates
Nine sets of eyes were on him, as he froze in the doorway. Of the people looking back at him only one looked human. The rest were a giant woman with milk white skin, a short and even shorter woman with similar shades of green skin with large ears, a mostly human looking woman with three eyes, a large woman who looked like she was part cow, an orange woman with gowns, and another woman with horns and pale lilac skin, though it was only visible on her hands, the rest of her body covered, including a veil, and then of course Trix who was giving him a ‘just get in here’ look.
He swallowed, and closed the door behind him.
“Hi,” he gave an awkward wave.
“Hi, are you okay?” The orange one asked, her voice bright and melodic, “Professor Trix said you were missing your clothes.”
“Oh, uh, yeah, I was asleep when she teleported me here.”
The woman laughed, “well that had to be quite the scene to wake up to.”
“Now that we’re all here, let’s go over introductions, we can start with our newcomer,” Trix said gesturing to June, “Just give your preferred name and pronouns.”
“Hi, I’m June Bethany, he/him,” he said, trying to discreetly keep his hands folded in front of his crotch.
“Hi hi, I am Lyric Swallows, She/Her pronouns,” The orange one said.
“Hello, I’m Bailey Tart, She/Her pronouns,” the one with three yes said.
“I’m Natalie Camaril, She/Her,” the one with horns and the veil said, “You can call me Nat.”
“Hi everyone, nice to meet you, I’m Maya Survoth, She/Her.” The cow woman said.
“I’m Anna Adventura,” the short green one, who couldn’t have been four feet tall, “She/Her, or They/Them, I don’t care either way.”
“Krista Trapper, She/Her,” the giant one said quietly.
“Libby Lighteye,” the other green woman said cheerfully, “She/Her.”
Last, the person June had thought was a human, but as she adjusted her hair he saw pointed ears, “And I am Tianna LaHore, she/her pronouns.”
“Excellent, and as I have said to everyone so far, I am Professor Boralitrix Gothma, feel free to call me Trix. Now I am going to be the one in charge of this dorm. Please treat everyone with respect, and if any problems arise that need a mediator feel free to come to me.” She gestured around the room, it was a bit dusty, and wall paper was peeling in a few places, “as you can see this dorm is a bit outdated, it was being used for storage the last few years. Per your letters, this is why lodgings were included in your scholarships. If you notice any hazards please alert me immediately, though there shouldn’t be any. Otherwise this dorm will be what you all make of it, so if you like the haunted dingy looking feel, free to leave it as is. If you want to improve it, then we can all work together to do so. Questions?”
“Yeah, what about our room assignments?” Anna asked.
“Excellent question,” Trix put her hands together, pulling one away to reveal a set of sticks. Now, currently we have the room for everyone, with the only issue being that one room is a single, and one of the doubles rooms only has one bed. So either someone will need to get very friendly very fast, or sleep on the ground until they can get a bed of their own. To keep things fair you will be drawing sticks to see who is sharing a room with who.”
June thought it was unreasonable to expect someone to sleep on the floor or share a bed with a stranger and thought everyone else would too. But to his surprise the others all lined up to grab a stick. Not wanting to be the only one not following suit, he joined the line. One by one they drew lots. Tianna drew the single room. Libby and Natalie drew the same room. Krista and Anna drew the same room, which June found slightly amusing since they were at the opposite sides of the height range. Maya and Lyric drew the same room. A bit of disappointment settled over June as he realized the last stick to draw was the room missing a bed, he and Bailey drew that lot.
“Alright your rooms have been decided,” Trix, said, passing out keys to each person, “I’ll let you all explore for a moment, then meet back here in fifteen minutes.”
June walked over to Bailey, “roommates then,” he said.
“It would seem that way,” she said, eyes taking in his appearance.
“Right, let’s go see the room then.” June said, leading the way to the stairs.
