NAOMI VALE - CODENAME VELVET

Naomi Hale has one of those faces that makes people think “soft-spoken sweetheart” right up until they learn what her power does. As Velvet, she is an Empowered heroine with a rare and deeply inconvenient gift: her touch drains power from other Empowered people and saps strength from ordinary humans, which means her combat profile is formidable and her day-to-day life is a logistical nightmare. She did not ask for her reputation, but she has one anyway—equal parts dangerous, tragic, and faintly glamorous in the way the public always seems to find women with difficult powers. Naomi herself is much less dramatic than the headlines suggest. She is warm-hearted, emotional, and a little too quick to get attached, with the kind of romantic streak that would be adorable in another life and is positively brutal in this one.

Away from the battlefield, Naomi reads as the sort of girl who would much rather be cuddling on a couch than terrifying a room full of villains by existing near them. She likes sweetness, reassurance, pretty things, feeling included, and the quiet fantasy that maybe one day love does not have to come with hazard warnings. She is not especially fond of isolation, pity, gloves, careful distancing, or that awful split second when people remember what her power means and start treating her like a beautifully wrapped biohazard. Friends would probably tell you Naomi feels everything intensely, falls into hope faster than she should, and can go from tender to quietly wounded in the time it takes someone to pull their hand back. Velvet may look like a sleek, dangerous codename, but at heart Naomi is less femme fatale and more touch-starved romantic trying very hard not to let the universe notice how badly she wants to be held.
