Chapter 88
by Takavir
That a tad ominous, yeah?
Nah it's probably nothing. Back to our boy!
After traveling through two sets of mirrors,(once to the guild guard security office, than again to reach Theo's home) Jason found himself sitting in a study, being informed of the rules of his next month. It was a splattering of rules that effectively boiled down to three: never wonder off from his Justicar detail, never perform umbramancy without permission, and when in doubt, the justicars make the decisions. After rules and introductions, Karrin and Sandra departed until their shifts, and Jason was left with Dean and Theo.
"Well, as nice as my home is Im sure you'd like to stretch you legs. Why don't we head out, run some errands, see the sights, and look through some shops, get you anything you might need for the next couple days, since you didn't really get time to pack." Theo stood and gestured towards the front door.
"Sounds good to me." Jason smiled as he stood, walking towards the front door with Theo and Dean. Upon exiting the house, Jason saw that Theo's home was a modest three story affair, with a small lawn of grass spreading around it out to a grassy hedge that seemed to act as a perimeter fence, as the only opening was the wagon sized arch they were currently walking towards. And the only reason he called it 'modest' was that he could see scattered across the city that sprawled out around them actual, honest to God, wizard towers. Some that seemed to tower four to five times higher than Theo's home.
"I thought wizard towers where a kids story time thing, people actually live in those?" He asked incredulously.
"Well, yea, some do." Theo laughed, caught off guard by the question. "Not that it strengthens their magic or anything, far as I can tell, people mostly pick them for the astetic, or so people have to really think about if it's worth it before bothering them for anything."
"Oh, because of all the stairs, I get it." Jason offered as they continued to walk, enjoying the mid-morning breeze coming in off the sea. As they moved into a area of town that seemed to be more commercial than residential, Jason started to realize that something was off. "It's the middle of the day, right? Where is everyone?" He looked over at Theo and Dean, who had been having a conversation about getting something or someone called 'jav'.
"Oh, must businesses are basically automated now a days." Dean replied, gesturing at the plate glass of the sweets shop they were walking by. "You pick what you want, put your money in the corresponding slot, and out comes your purchase. Let's shops be open nearly 24/7, and the owner is free to pursue their own interests." Dean explains.
"Yep, and while we can stop into a shop to get you some casual clothes later, I insist on you receiving a proper suit first, properly sized, made from woven mage silk, each one uniquely handmade for the purchaser, it'll make you look like a million gold and feel ten feet tall!" Theo shot out excitedly as he looked back and forth at the other two.
"You don't mean..." Dean groaned
"Woven... Mage silk?" Jason repeated, a dozen questions bouncing around his head.
"Yes my boy! A highly guarded secret creation of the world's greatest seamstress/tailor! Cool on hot days, warm on those you find chilly, stretches and flexes with you well enough for strenuous activity, and tough enough to stop the knives you don't see coming!"
"Nope, absolutely not. I don't think that's a good idea, I think it would be better if we just picking him up some nor..." Dean tried to object, but Theo chuckled and interrupted him.
"I hear and accept your objections, Dean. But unfortunately by the power invested in me as a guild council member I'm going to have to overrule you. By the end of the day, Jason, you will have a suit that will last you the next fifty years!" Theo smiled wife, rubbing his hands together, before lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "And completing our daily two-for-one special, we can watch Dean try to interact professionally with his ex."
"Hey, I heard that!" Dean snaps, starting to lose his emotions.
"You were meant to! Onward to Vas Textiles!" Theo cackled, leading them on down the street.
