Chapter 7 by Odysseus Odysseus

Who are the first guests to arrive?

Mr and Mrs Cohen

Not long after you hear a knock on the door and are greeted by Mr and Mrs Cohen, two of your neighbours. The husband hands you a bottle of wine as a gift and the wife makes her way to the kitchen to help June. Mr Cohen is roughly ten years your senior while his wife is barely a day older than you or June. The two make an odd couple, Mrs Cohen generally hovers around Mr Cohen doing nothing until Mr Cohen instructs her to do to something.

You give Mr Cohen a beer and introduce yourself.

"My name is Daniel, and here is my better half, my wife Leah," the man says. Leah nods when her name is spoken. "Welcome to the neighbourhood" Daniel adds.

More and more guest soon arrive and the party is split into two, the wives stay inside while you and the rest of the men head into the backyard. Though you are the same age as most of the wives, you are the youngest of all the husbands - every single one seems to be a lawyer or broker or executive with a ton of vocational success. June finds you amongst the men and pulls you aside.

"These women are fucking awful" whispers June. "All of them, every single one, is a housewife. They do nothing all day except cook or clean. Our entire conversation is just petty gossip."

June had tried to avoid attention but seemed to have failed. Daniel and Leah Cohen both appear at the edge of your view and are walking towards you.

"This is a lovely party," says Leah. "But June, you don't seem to be enjoying yourself. Perhaps you should have a drink. Relax a little."

Leah hands June a glass of wine. June hesitates for a moment, before gulping down the whole drink. She and Leah head back to the kitchen to join the other woman and finish dinner.

"Pardon my prodding," Daniel says, "but how is June adjusting to life in the suburbia?" Daniel hands you a glass of what looks like whisky. You take a sip before replying and notice a weird aftertaste.

"She just needs some time to get used to it" you answer. "We both do."

You take another sip of the drink. It is not whiskey, though it has a similar smell and look. It still must be **** has you feel it taking the edge off. The more you drink the more you want.

"And be honest with me: you know you can do better with June, right?"

How do you answer?
