Oobleck then moved away without saying another word. Jaune blinked. He'd expected the conversation to have gone on a little longer... He then wondered if Ozpin had put Oobleck up to that, and stiffened slightly, realizing that Ozpin would probably want a better read on him...

Then, as the day went in with Grimm killing, Jaune noticed Oobleck had been going around, and talking to members of the team individually. Wait... Was he asking everyone that question?

When the sun started going down, Oobleck gathered the team near one of the ruined buildings. "Excellent work!" he praised them. "That's enough for one day. So you six go ahead and set up camp here! Your leaders and I will secure the perimeter!"

Jaune mentally sighed, realizing that he wouldn't get alone time with his girls tonight, but followed Oobleck along with Ruby. They eventually reached a cliff at the edge of the ruins, and Jaune nearly choked on his own spit as he saw multiple massive Grimm in the distance. Ruby of course made to shoot them, but Oobleck stopped her, informing her that it would only agitate them.

"Fear not, we are in no danger," he informed the two. "Not all Grimm are mindless you know. Or rather, Grimm that ancient are no longer mindless. They have done something incredible for their species: learn. They learned that attacking human borders is liable to get them killed, and what we lack in strength, we make up for in will, and that killing one of us brings more."

"But... Why are they this close to the city then?" Jaune asked.

"Yeah... what are they doing?" Ruby concurred.

"At a guess... Waiting," Oobleck replied, before they made to head back.

"Oh, Professor Oobleck? Can we ask you something?" Ruby asked as they walked.

"You wish to know why I have been interrogating your comrades all day?" Oobleck asked.

"Actually, I was wondering why exactly you chose to become a Huntsman."

"Yeah, I'd like to know that too," Jaune agreed.

"Why don't you both look around and tell me what you see?" Oobleck asked.

"Uhh... Old buildings? Empty streets?" Ruby posited tentatively, taking the question a bit too literally.

Jaune thought a bit deeper about it on the other hand, and said, "I see a tragedy. A place once full of life, and no longer has any."

"Mr. Arc, you are closer to the heart of what I see," Oobleck told Jaune approvingly. "I see lives that could have been saved. As huntsmen and huntresses, it is our job to save and protect people, and while I am more than capable of doing so with my physical capabilities, I believe I can make a much larger difference with my mind. As a professor at Beacon, I pass along knowledge, the most powerful of weapons, to every student who passes through my classroom. I look at these ruins, and see lives that could have been saved, but I also see opportunity. An opportunity to study and learn from this tragedy, and become stronger. I am a huntsman, because there is nothing else I would rather be."

Jaune was a bit stunned, reevaluating his opinion of the eccentric man significantly.
