Chapter 4 by CxSeth
What does the pair find in the jungle?
More than they could have hoped for.
Johanna paused in disbelief at the sight before her. She had expected a waterfall, it was the sound she was following for the past few minutes, but the actual sight of the falling stream, and the crystalline pond it was falling into, and… was that a cave entrance she saw just behind the falling water? If it was empty, then this was an improbably good find.
“C-Captain? Am I… imagining this?” Johnny asked, apparently struck with the same disbelief that Johanna was experiencing. The taller woman shook her head and blinked before replying. “No. Fate seems to be taking pity on us at last.” She helped him towards the waterfall, and along a narrow path into the cave behind it.
The cave itself was roughly circular, with only the one entrance, and was about fifteen feet in diameter. Most importantly, it was devoid of any signs of prior habitation. Johanna was worried that they might find some manner of wild beast taking residence within, but there was nothing of the sort, only cold stone. She eased Johnny down against a wall. He had been in pain the entire walk over, and Johanna suspected that in addition to the wound they had wrapped, he might have bruised ribs. The young man was breathing heavily, but appeared grateful for the chance to rest.
“Stay here, give your side a chance to recover.” Johanna said, looking out at the falling water again. “Yes ma’am, as you say.” She smiled at his automatic reply. That he still considered her his superior officer was helpful, as other men might let their egos get in the way and further aggravate their injury. “I’ll go see what I can do to collect some food and water. Don’t leave the cave.” Johnny gave a salute, winced, and nodded his compliance, and Johanna left, this time unencumbered by the injured cabin boy.
The jungle was full of life, and it didn’t take much effort for Johanna to gather some edible berries and nuts, which she bundled up in a large green leaf. She was sure some of the other plants she saw were edible, or had medicinal uses, but for now she stuck to items that she recognized, or which resembled foods she recognized. In all, she was gone less than a half hour before returning to the cave with a satisfying harvest. The jungle heat was somewhat stifling, and as soon as she returned, she immediately doffed her coat again, causing Johnny’s greeting to catch in his throat. Johanna wasn’t the type to flaunt her sexuality in front of her crew, at least not so overtly, but the young man had already seen her without her shirt or coat, and since both of their shirts had been reduced to wound care, they would probably be seeing a lot more of each other’s topless forms over the coming days. Weeks? Years? Johanna didn’t want to think about how long they might be here. She needed to focus on the present if they were going to survive at all. She placed the food next to Johnny. “Eat what you can. Feel any better?”
Johnny reached for the food, trying his best to conceal the fact that moving his upper body at all still seemed to cause him some amount of pain. "A little, C-Captain." He lied, and Johanna frowned. She hadn't expected a great improvement, the wound alone would probably take days before starting to heal, but she was really concerned about the severity of the injury. She let it slide for the moment, taking a large leaf out to the waterfall.
Johanna folded the leaf into a large triangular cup and filled it, taking a long drink before filling it again and returning to Johnny, offering him the cool, clear water. He accepted it with a stuttered thanks and drank deeply, clearly parched. Johanna eyed the young cabin boy carefully as he drank. It might be beneficial to examine him again now that they were safe, well-fed, and hydrated, but then, her efforts might be better spent exploring a bit more. Things had certainly taken a turn for the better, but there were still challenges ahead of them.
