More quests and reading a book

“My voice changed again!” Matt tells me in his now very girly voice.

His previous voice could maybe have belonged to an androginous man but now it sounds like a woman trying to sound as girly as possible.

“I swear I didn’t upgrade my perk.” He explains while checking his phone.

“That’s unfair! It’s saying the QuestMaster upgraded it as a reward for getting to level 10.” He says focused on the app.

“I guess that’s a pretty big change, but maybe you shouldn’t panic too much. Remember when we visited Alex he didn’t notice any change in your voice.” I try to console him.

“That doesn’t surprise me, I don’t know if I told you, but when I listened to my older streams, my voice changed as well. I guess perks apply retroactively.”

Interesting, so it’s different from changes from rewards that Alex did notice.

“Still that’s so unfair, your voice is deeper, while I’m going the opposite way!” He complains.

I admit Perk Sharing II might be too powerful, as I bought Matt’s Sweet Voice II upgrade, my voice also improved, I can’t really tell how good it sounds because it is my voice, but it sounds deeper.

“I don’t really know what to say, I don’t choose my rewards.” I lie as he looks me in the face.

I might have shown guilt before, but I keep myself as calm as if I was telling the truth, thanks to the Poker Face I perk helping me hide my expressions.
He doesn’t talk about his new class, he never told me about his class out of embarrassment, so I don’t think he’ll want to talk about it now.
We finish our meals and he washes our plates as I go to my bedroom.

I decide to check the app before going to sleep, and to give everyone their new quests.

I want to hear his singing voice and I guess that’s what makes this quest difficult. Maybe I should buy the Optional Step perk at some point, if I made singing optional, I think the quest would be successful no matter what. I press yes.

I guess the part where she needs to send the cosplay to someone is really hard for her, but I press yes. If she was confident enough to send me that picture of her, I think she can also send anyone a cosplay photo.

The repost would boost her account too much, I think if her account was too big, it would make posting her pictures online way more difficult. She needs her popularity to come in naturally as she gains confidence. I choose the cosplay perk because it is her class name, I think it might have a higher max level than Modelling does.

Maria will receive the following quest :

• Go to the gym
• Exercise for at least an hour

Repeat quest detected, reward is lessened and xp is halfed.

This is the only reward that actually feels like one, I guess repeating quests really isn’t great, I need more ideas for Maria.

Cotton will receive the quest “read a book”

In Cotton’s case, I decide to press the Target Unaware checkbox, I don’t really know if that would change much, but she’s the best target to experiment on, since I only used this perk on Maria once, and I didn’t really see the difference.

(Cotton’s POV)

I’m finally done with class, I hate wasting my time so much. Why do I need to go to school when I’ll just receive my dad’s businesses anyway. He has a few apartments he’s renting, and the library, but that’s a lot of money coming in.

Speaking of the library, I wonder if I should go there today, maybe read a book, and see the new guy. I admit this loser intrigued me a little.

He told me it didn’t bother him to have a shitty life working there, as if he could simply be satisfied with what he got. I don’t believe that, my life is a 100 times better than his and I still want more. Is he just so much of a loser that he likes having no future?

Even if I never use it, I’ll at least get a business degree soon, what will he do with his degree? Become a teacher? I laugh at the idea, if this guy tried teaching, his students would destroy his life.

I remember how he brought me a cup, without objection like the servant he is. He would break at the smallest hint of harassment.

I enter the library, and the first thing I see is he’s talking to someone I don’t know. A fatty with glasses and tanned skin. I feel like I’m kinda missing my entrance, but that ugly will have to wait, I am first.

As I walk towards the desk, he notices me, and I take the time to read his badge again. Right he’s called John, a very boring name for a very boring person.

“Sorry Rita, one second.” He tells her in his confident voice.

She seems surprised as she sees me. And I can imagine she at least heard about me, seeing her face she’s slightly cuter from the front, she takes a step back.

“T-That’s okay John, I-I’m disturbing you during your work.” She apologies as she leaves some space for me.

“What can I do for you miss?” He ask, and I notice that he actually looks different, I can’t really tell, but I guess he dressed up better, and his face looks a little more handsome.

“You bought fitting clothes. Whatever, bring me a coffee.” I tell him before sitting at a table.

As I wait for him to come back I look at a bookshelf nearby. I guess I could read a little while I wait.
I grab a random book and start reading. This isn’t very well written. I don’t have the time to read much of it, but the action isn’t described properly, and the chapter ends with the protagonist getting run over by a truck.
Who is this even for? Is it an awareness book about road accidents?
Before I can check chapter 2, I hear the sound of my hot cup of coffee hitting the table, and I look up and gesture at John to sit down as well.

“Are you into those kinds of books?” He asks me.

“No, I took a random one, I don’t understand how this could be interesting? And the cover is a castle when the story talks about a guy getting run over.” I explain my confusion.

“You know maybe you should give it a chance? Maybe you’d like what happens next? It is a pretty popular entry in the genre.” He tries to explain.

“That’s a genre? Where people randomly die from car accident?” At first he laughs and he then nods.

I can’t think of why losers like this. I close the book and slide it towards John.

“Anyway, who’s the girl?” I ask while pointing at the fatty, she’s reading a book while standing up, not far from here. And I swear I notice her checking us out as I look.

“That’s a friend.” Is all he says. He should be happy to answer my questions.

I sip on my cup, as he waits for me.

“She doesn’t look like a friend to me.” I say.

“What do you mean?” He asks.

“She looks ready to jump at you. She’s watching you right now.” I explain.

He turns to look at her, and she puts her book in front of her face, as if it would hide her somehow.

“No, she’s just shy, and we were talking about a book, she’s just waiting on me to finish our conversation.”

This guy is blind as fuck, I know his type. He’d still wonder if you were into him as you suck his dick. The fatty is unlucky she fell for the most passive loser ever.
At least he’s a good looking loser so she does have some taste, but she’ll never come on strong enough for him to understand.
I finish my coffee and stand up, ready to leave as I grab my bag.

“Wait, since you started it, how about borrowing it?” He says as he hands me the book I picked up.

I would refuse, but I wouldn’t mind reading a book, so I grab it from his hand and put it in my bag.

I leave and the fatty seems happy as he comes back to talk to her.

Author's Note: I'm sick and I didn't sleep much so it's a short chapter. I also spent way too much time thinking of what quests to give everyone, so if you have ideas, I'll take them.
