More Context: Werewolves

Werewolves are magical creatures at their core, they get more powerful the more magical energy they have. This has their instincts go after powerful mates, this essentially makes it so an alpha of a pack ends up siring most of the children.

It takes more than just good breeding to develop their magical energy, this takes form in fights or physical exertion. With their power tied to their bodies working out makes them temper their magic increasing its quality.

This magic power makes it fairly difficult to cast spells on them but not impossible, this also lets them easily dispel any that do get cast on them.

Its fairly rare when an alpha of a pack changes as the energy required is more than even what they were born with. Its unknown where this energy comes from but its thought that when a pack gets too large they send their males out and they encounter monsters in the wilds and thus from eating the monsters increases their own energy. This results in the monster populations around packs to be extraordinarily low so its actually welcomed when a pack splits. The more powerful an alpha the larger the pack can be.
