Chapter 16 by dialectic dialectic

How is Josephine?

Moping. Take her out for dinner?

"Hi," I call out.

No response from Josephine. I wander to the dining room to find her at the table, head in her hands.

I pause by the table, and stand quietly for a moment, out of respect. "Dani?" I ask, playing innocent.

Josephine sighs. "Yeah, Dani." She doesn't expand on this answer. I've talked with Jo about Dani before, and she knows I'm not a fan.

I don't want to push, but I do have to make a token gesture. "Want to talk about it?"

Jo looks up at me, quickly judging my expression. I try to keep any judgment from my own face. It's not that difficult though. Whatever else I have in mind, what I'd like best is to list her mood.

Josephine's face relaxes slightly, as she seems to decide that I'm not baiting her. But she doesn't want to talk to me about Dani just now. "No... thanks. I need to think about things for a bit."

"Want to go out for dinner tonight?" I offer. "My treat."

Josephine looks to me with a skeptical expression. "What, on your lucrative salary?"

"I found an extra hundered bucks today," I lie, "and put it on my back account. I'm in a good mood. Come on," I cajole her sightly.

"Okay," she says, smiling slightly. "What do you want to eat?"

"Anything but pizza," I tell her.

An hour later, you're waiting for your food at a local Thai restaurant. Josephine is not in the mood for booze just now, and has opted for an iced tea. You'd like all your senses about you, and also have a sense of solidarity with Josephine, so you followed suit.

There's a lull in the conversation. You think that now is as good a time as any to break the ice about the App. But how to go about it?

What do you do?
