Misa's Regret

No response came forth, Misa stayed silent for a long moment, taking everything in. Your words had touched her deeply, probably even more than you realize. Her face turned pale, her lips were quivering slightly, and her eyes welled up with tears. "Takeru..." She says, trying to get you to look at her.

"Don't!" You shout, turning away from Misa to wipe your tears away. You take a deep breath, trying to calm your anger. "Just... Forget it, none of this matters."

"It does!" Misa snaps back, you are surprised by the sudden outburst. Misa stands up and starts walking towards you. "It does matter! I was wrong about you Takeru, I thought you didn't like me, but it turns out you were only hiding your feeling." Misa takes your hand, but instead of holding it she places it on her cheek. Her skin is smooth, and warm to the touch. "I love you too, you were the one I wanted to marry, I loved you since we were kids."

"It's too late now." You say coldly, pulling your hand away from Misa.

"Please, don't say that." Misa whispers, her voice wavering. "We could still be together, if you would just give us a chance?"

"That's not gonna happen." You say, shaking your head. "You're supposed to be my step-mother, and that's what you are. Nothing more."

"But I am also your best friend..." Misa says, looking defeated. She then reaches up her hands to hug you, but you shake your head.

"You were." You say. "Now you aren't."

"I am your BEST FRIEND!" Misa exclaims angrily. "And I love you, I have always loved you, and I still love you now."

"Not enough to not marry my dad." You growl back. "Look, I can't be with you."

"But-" Misa starts to say but you cut her off.

"You are married to my dad!

"I'm sorry Takeru." Misa apologizes, "If I'd known how you felt I never would have married him." There's sincerity in her voice, she really means what she says.

"But you did, you can't change that, so you might as well just forget about me."

"Takeru, please, don't say that. We can still be together."

"No we can't."

"Y-you can't mean that!" Misa stammers, "We have been best friends our entire lives! How can you leave me?!"

"Because I have to choose between my father or you." You sigh, "I chose my father, which means I have to let go of you."

"That's not true!" Misa says, grabbing your shoulders. "You're lying! You just want to be alone, you don't want me."

"You're right, I do want to be alone." You say, closing your eyes. "So just go away."

"Takeru, please, don't do this!"

"You're not my best friend anymore, so goodbye." You say, turning away from Misa and putting your hands over your ears. Misa breaks down and falls to her knees in front of you.

"I love you, I need you, please don't leave me! Don't you dare move on, I need you, I love you!" Misa begs, sobbing. "Please don't leave me, I'll do anything you want... Just don't leave me."

I..." You're about to give in to Misa, but then you think about your father. It's true he stole the woman you loved, but it also healed him. When your mother died he was a broken man, he stopped working and was barely able to eat. But with Misa around, he was happy again, his smile was back. He was even working again, doing much better than before. If Misa was just his girlfriend or even just his fiancé, you would have no problem stealing Misa back from him, but now that she is his wife, you couldn't bring yourself to betray your father like that. "I'm sorry," You whisper, looking down at Misa. "I just can't be with you anymore, it'll hurt dad too much."

Misa stares at you for a moment before speaking, "...I understand." Misa wiped the tears in her eyes and stood up, "So if I wasn't married to your dad, would you want me?"

"Yes." You say without thinking, Misa smiled at you.

"I see..." Misa mutters something you can't hear, then she walks off, leaving you alone in the living room.
