Chapter 17 by Yabusa Yabusa

How do baseball tryouts go?

Men's baseball tryouts were yesterday

You glanced around the field. there were two diamonds, side by side, one used by the men's baseball team and one by the women's softball team. You were slightly panicked when you saw only one diamond with any sign of human life: the women's side. The men's side was covered in geese, who apparently adored lounging around on baseball diamonds.

There was, at least, somebody with a clipboard standing between the two diamonds, the school's athletics director. Maybe you were just... really early. You hurried over to him, and caught your breath for a moment. The director looked at your winded self for a moment, before you looked up with a friendly smile. "I must be early, I'm here to sign up for the baseball tryouts."

"You're late, actually. Tryouts were yesterday." The guy squinted at you like you were some sort of idiot.

"But, I checked the website yesterday, it said tryouts were today at nine?"

The guy laughed at you, which you had no understanding why. "Yeah, don't trust the website. I dunno how to change that, and Frank was out sick all week and my computer has a broken backspace key so I used the voice typing on my phone. The information was on there though, look."

The director pulled up the website on the page, which at first glance looked pretty normal to you. The site said Tuesday at nine, just like you thought.

And then the director scrolled down slightly. Your nightmare scenario became realized by the stupidest jumble of words you'd ever read. You couldn't help but speak them aloud in a monotone voice, like you were reciting an ancient incantation meant to crush a person's soul.

"Hey Siri delete the text no don't write that delete the other text no stop it Siri hey Siri delete the page dam it Siri okay just write that tryouts were now on Monday at mine no not mine at nine you stupid robot write what I folk king say."

The director grimaced. "I think my phone hates me. Anyway, it's all right there, but you shoulda just come by my office or by the field or really just any of the many, many places where I posted a handwritten note instead to notify everyone about the tryout date change. Sorry kid, nothing I can do."

You were gutted. What was the point of that coin if you couldn't make use of it? You spent a whole week, probably dropped a grade letter in all your classes from the assignments you couldn't focus on, and it was for what, nothing? You growled at yourself for not being more aware of the situation! You looked left and right like there was some sort of answer somewhere...

You turned to look at the women on the other diamond. "What's going on here then?"

"Softball tryouts, those also moved up a day. Though, I don't think you'll have much luck there either. Hey, better luck next year. Go Sentinels, yadda yadda." The director wandered off to talk to the women on the softball diamond.

The answer was easy. But also a bad idea. A very bad idea.

You marched across the field to the facilities, heading into the locker rooms. You didn't know if you should be even thinking about doing this. You were hurtling forward toward one of those private bathrooms, but at any moment you could turn around, head home, and just... be a normal student who didn't do profoundly absurd stuff.

You looked around to make sure nobody was paying attention to you and you closed the door, setting your backpack on the sink. Unzipping the backpack and peering inside the inner pocket, your little magic coin sat in wait, almost beckoning you to be an utter fool. Your pulse shot up, your hands shook. The idea of becoming Jane for a competitive, and also very public, sport was like you were about to race in the Indy 500 a week after driving a car for the first time. People were going to see you. They were going to know you. And if you weren't careful, they would also likely learn the truth about you.

But, it might be your only chance this year to showcase your magically-amplified potential.

Were you really about to flip the coin and try out for the women's team instead?
