Van is, at first glance, an almost suspiciously ordinary young man standing in the middle of a cast built from living weapons, damaged prodigies, and women who were already halfway to legend before Genesis Response got its hands on them. He grew up as a war orphan with no clear record of where he came from, no family name he ever kept, and long, jagged gaps in his memory that make his own past feel less like a story than a ruin. What sets him apart is not obvious power in the theatrical superhero sense, but an unusually adaptive genome that reacts to outside pressures in ways nobody fully understands. The system can push on him, test him, try to shape him, and yet something in him resists settling into the forms it wants. That resistance does not make him invulnerable. If anything, it makes him more unsettling to the people around him, because he is clearly being affected, just not cleanly, not predictably, and never in quite the way the machinery seems to prefer.

For all that mystery, Van is not written as a master manipulator striding confidently above the cast. Quite the opposite: much of his appeal is that he feels profoundly in over his head. He is surrounded by powerful super-heroines, each with more training, more status, more trauma, and often more raw **** than he has, while all of them are being aimed toward a conflict with the Architect that feels far larger than any one frightened young man should be expected to carry. He resists the system’s manipulations on instinct as much as principle, bristling at **** even while being **** to cooperate with it, but that resistance is tangled up with uncertainty, anger, and the constant awareness that he may be the least prepared person in the room. Van’s role is not comfortable in his role as master. He is trying to hold onto his own judgment while standing at the center of a story that keeps threatening to become bigger, stranger, and more dangerous than he is ready for.
