Maria's new class

(Maria's POV)
I hear a ringing sound in my small appartment, usually I would have trouble getting out of bed but somehow I feel better than usual.
I turn my alarm off and start my morning routine, I take a shower, brush my teeth, put on some makeup… Something’s wrong. I don’t really know how to explain it but it’s like when your ears pop and you feel like you’re hearing properly for the first time except instead of my ears it’s my entire body.
I don’t have muscle pain, my skin complexion is healthier, and my teeth look perfect.
I’m not a genius, but it doesn’t take long to understand what happened, the Life Quest app is real, and it did reward me for eating a full meal with a “full recovery”.

I open the app in excitement, I want more rewards if it can improve my life so easily! The app is very simple, it’s only a window with my profile, and my current quest.

Right, supposedly this QuestMaster is the one giving me my quest yesterday. I guess it’s some kind of advanced A.I, there might be some cooldown before my next quest then, I put my phone down and start chewing on my breakfast.

“Lily, don’t scratch the bin!” I stop my cat’s antics again, I love her but sometime I’d like it if she stopped messing up my apartment.

I arrive a few minutes early and I open up the library, the boss won’t come today, he’s going to a concert with his daughter in another town, but I’m not the type to skip work when my boss isn’t here. I do take a lot more breaks though.
John opens the door in panic, he looks around like a dog searching for his master. He is more than an hour late, and I know I should reprimand him for letting me work alone, but I look at his face and he’s too goofy looking to keep my serious face.
I tell him that it’s okay, and that the boss is away today and he starts working in a hurry, as if he could catch up for the time he missed.

I don’t dislike John, I might have overshared a little the first time we drank together and that made it awkward for me, but I know he’s not a bad person. He looks a little scared everytime he talks to me and I like to play into it and tease him, he has funny reactions.

I come back to the desk as soon as my lunch break finishes, and a young girl is already waiting there. I don’t know her name, but she comes here almost every day, she’s a short and chubby girl with straight black hair, big blocky glasses and tanned skin. I know it’s a little mean to say but I find her a little ugly, she’s not that bad looking but she could use some makeup for sure, and maybe eat less too.

She looks surprised I’m the one at the counter, and slightly disappointed.
“H-hello… could I have a li-library card please?” She asks unsure of herself.

I thought she already had one, but it makes sense, I don’t think she ever borrowed a book, she just read them here, and stole a few glances at John once in a while.
“Sure, let me call someone that’s can help you with that…
John! Stop being lazy and come help me! Client need you to make a library card!”

The girl shrinks back on herself as she hears me call John, but she also starts to become red, and I grin.
“Please wait for my colleague, he’ll handle your card for you.”

John arrives in a hurry, he looks scared when he looks at me kind of like my cat when it knows it made a mess. I just shrug it off and go to our storage area, there’s a lot of books we can’t put on the shelves, so sometimes, we check our inventory and update our online database so people can still borrow those books. As I start counting them I receive a notification on my phone.

I have no idea how those class-themed quest should appear, but I’m okay with gaining more points. I open the app and my profile has been updated since yesterday.

What the hell? What is this class? Is it an actual thing? I’m so confused, I’m not a mom, I only ever had one partner and she didn't have the parts to knock me up. I tap the class name, but it doesn’t do anything, it seems I can’t see more information, and I can’t reroll it either.

What the hell am I supposed to do now? Do I keep doing the quests anyway?

(John's POV)
Fuck, I messed up, why did I have to press a class like that, I didn’t even look and now Maria is going to become a yoga mom somehow, I feel guilty, and seing her as soon as I messed up didn’t make me feel better.

“Are-are you okay?” The small girl asks, getting me out of my thoughts.
“I’m sorry miss… So for your library card, I’m going to need an id card, and an address. There’s also a small yearly fee…"

"R-right, here is my Id…” She gives me her card and I enter everything in the database.

Rita Torres, 22 years old… I know she comes here a lot but I thought she already had a card.
She looks like she wants to say something so I smile at her but she looks away while readjusting her big glasses.

“Here’s your card miss."

"… You can call me Rita. I-if you want…” She’s shaking as she grabs her card.

“Sure Rita, so what do you do in life?” I try to do some small talk, but she looks embarrassed somewhat.

“I-I’m a student…” She says, and I wait for her to continue but she just freeze.

“Ah, a student, what are you studying then?"

"I-I’m in Engineering Physics…” She seems to pick on my confusion as she continues.

“Basically I’m p-planning on working on designing planes and making them more efficient… But right now I’m still doing the general courses and I’ll specialize n-next year…”
She looked a little nerdy, but she’s basically way smarter than I’ll ever be.

"That’s pretty impressive, that looks like a lot of work…"

"Y-yeah…"

Great, I killed the flow again, she looks like she still want to say something but someone else enters, with a big pile of books to return and I’m **** to cut the conversation there.

The day is finally over, I kept trying to avoid Maria, but it looks like she might have noticed, so I’ll have to act like nothing happened when I see her tomorrow.

I receive a text as I enter my car. Alex is asking me if I’m still available for a night at the bar tomorrow and obviously I say yes. I know he’s often busy with work, but he’s at least available on the weekends, I kinda lost contact with my friends from uni, and he’s the person I spend the most time with out of work.

I arrive home and sigh when I see the state of the kitchen, Matt didn’t clean tonight either, I roll up my sleeves, but I stop before grabbing the plate.
Fuck it, I have a magic app and I’ll use it, he can clean the house when I’m not here, and if it gives me xp, even better.
I open the app, and look at the two empty slots left, I click on Add Target and select Matt from the list.

I press yes, and the app displays his profile.

While I’m at it I should choose a class for him. Earlier I read that when giving quests linked with a class, I would gain bonus xp, so I want to give him some kind of cleaning class.
I press Add Class and a giant list appears again, this time I scroll carefully to avoid choosing one by mistake. I can’t believe an app this sophisticated doesn’t even have confirmation window when choosing a class.
I see a few classes that might fit my simple goal: Maid, House wife, Cleaning Lady.

I notice a trend of most of the classes hinting at being female oriented, this app might be slightly biased. I think about the fact it’s creator might be sexist, but then I think about the fact I don’t know anything about this creator or how the app arrived on my phone, and I decide this is something I’d prefer to avoid thinking about.

I select housewife while imagining Matt cooking me a meal in an apron and I laugh at the dumb picture in my head.

Great, well let’s get to it then, I add a quest with Matt as a target, and I write “Wash the plates and clean the kitchen”, but as I press the send quest, an error message pops up.

Impossible to send a two-steps quest without the Quest Designer II perk.

I’m a little surprised but it makes some sense, I saw this perk earlier but I didn’t understand what steps where, it seems every instruction is counted as separate. So I can only asks him to do one thing.
Maybe I can get away with something like this instead?

I press yes and the quest is sent. I don’t think that’s a bad compromise, at worst nothing happens and at best, Matt will clean the kitchen and I’ll even get lots of xp for it.

I grab eggs from the fridge and prepare myself an omelet, I hear Matt playing so I guess he didn’t check his phone yet.
I eat and go to my room, I’m too tired to chat tonight and prepare to go to sleep, not forgetting to turn my alarm on this time. This day was so tiring, between being late and choosing a class for Maria without looking, at least the boss wasn't here, this could have turned bad.

I think about Maria some more, how about giving her the same quest as last night?

It might be a lessened reward, but I think Maria will still appreciate it. I turn off my phone and fall asleep not long afterward.

Author's Note: I'm sorry if the class I chose for Maria disappointed you, I felt like I could do a lot with that, and I like how big of a change it will make on her. Obviously you can suggest ideas or give feedback, I only have a few quests in mind for the current targets, and I'm spending a lot of time setting up more characters to use later.
