Make an appointment with Miss Caldwell the Librarian

Sitting across from you behind her desk is Miss Caldwell the librarian, a hawk-nosed, bespectacled blonde woman in her thirties in a meticulously pristine and pressed set of jet black robes. You've left Sapienta behind in her basket, since you aren't sure that your new familiar would make a good impression, especially if she were to move and make you flinch.

"I understand you are entering House Leontes under the Housemaster's sponsorship," she says. "If I find you suitable for the Library, you will have to understand that we maintain Strict Discipline here. Discipline is not only important to protect the time and concentration of our scholars, but much of the Library's collection is actively dangerous to the careless, the foolhardy, or the merely ignorant." Miss Caldwell clears her throat. "There is no flashy glory here, no dueling, no grand conjurations. Here in the Library are Silence and Wisdom, Depth and Diligence, History and Understanding. Now tell me again why you are interested in working at the Library at Boarbristle."

From Miss Caldwell's tone of voice, she sounds certain that the library is primary, while Boarbristle Academy is merely incidental, its roof and residence.

"Librarian," you say, addressing her as she bade you, "Though my talents brought me to the attention of Leontes' Housemaster, my purpose and inclination bring me here. I want to learn more about the history of magic, so I may use it with greater wisdom."

Miss Caldwell nods and clears her throat. "Continue, please," she says. You think she's giving the bites on your neck a critical eye. When you last looked at the mirror, it appeared the bruises on your face had faded to near-obscurity.

Roll +BRAVERY(+3) (+3 BRAVERY) to ENCOUNTER the Librarian and ask for a GOAL related to the library.

• On a 10+, Miss Caldwell gives you a task related to CUNNING. Take +1 Forward on your next roll.
• On a 7-9, you have to convince Miss Caldwell in character or use a FAVOR. Or beg to submit to her discipline (HAVE SEX) and on success, she will accept you and grant you a task. Take a task related to DILIGENCE.
• On a MISS, the Librarian decides you are not suitable. (You may narrate a dramatic scene, return quietly to your house, or seek consolation with one of your first-day FRIENDs).

Fergus Firetail, Dorothy the Porter, and Nurse Wormwood are your FRIENDS and each will freely grant one FAVOR. Your new familiar Sapienta also counts as a FRIEND with a FAVOR, for whatever an intelligent magical snake can do.
