Magic

“Magic seems like a broad subject.”, Flinch told her. Valery nodded, “It is, there are many schools and even ways of casting. There are arcane casters, generally using a book to bend magic to their will with runes and incantations. They can use destructive magic very well but also defensive spells. Arcane casters are very good in combat if they have the time to get their spells off. Then there are druids, in touch with nature and casting at will without warning. Their magic depends on their surroundings though, the less connected to nature, the less powerful the druid. Their spells are also rather slow, so they thrive in their own territory, where they had time to set up. There are holy casters, pulling their magic from their devotion to a deity, who are great at healing, defending and supporting other warriors.”. “Like you?”, Flinch asked. “Yes, like me.”, Valery confirmed. She clearly wanted to talk up her school of magic more, but she also felt ashamed because of the humiliating situation she was in.

Valery continued, “Finally there are forbidden schools of magic. Summoning holds the power to bring beings from other worlds over into ours and under your control. It is considered very dangerous and illegal, as a summoner could loose control and free the outsider, endangering the whole world. It does carry significant power though.”. She was rubbing her legs together, clearly uncomfortable with talking about the next kind of magic, “Finally there is… necromancy. A foul technique, perverting the cycle of life and ****. Bring the dead under your control, unleash disease and plague, suck the life **** out of people. It is the antithesis to holy magic and shunned by all.”. It took her a moment to recover from even talking about the magic she despised, “All magic shares the weakness of body. Some spells enhance your strength, but only temporarily, so casters are mostly just as strong as a fit member of their race. Also, except for the druid… and the necromancer, they can all be neutralised if you gag them as they require a vocal component to cast their spells.

“Very insightful, thank you.”, Flinch was positively surprised at how helpful she was.

“Do you want to train in magic or hear about more styles?”, Valery asked.
