Chapter 18

Does he keep up?
Lost
Out of the schoolgrounds, and crashing through the woods towards the hills, Aaralon did his best to keep pace with the fleet-footed elves. However, it didn't take very long for them to completely outpace him, leaving him behind, alone in the woods. Stopping to catch his breath, Aaralon cursed his luck, and started to think better of his decision to ditch a sure-fire score with Camila to chase these elves, who seemed bound to either ignore him or play with him. He punched a tree as he crouched over. He didn't have any endurance-enhancing spells; this would be something he'd have to correct when he got back to College. For now, he'd have to figure out what to do.
After he felt like he had gotten his wind back, Aaralon looked around himself. There didn't seem to be any sign of the elves around him, even using a detection spell. They had either left him in the lurch, or were hiding themselves.
"Hide and seek again, eh?" Aaralon snorted, "I'm getting pretty tired of that game."
Aaralon figured that the elves could probably track him whenever they wanted, so his object was to either find them or meet up with them at the hills. Either way, he needed to find a way to the hills. Spotting a bird soaring overhead, he focused for a moment, and closed his eyes, then opened them again, seeing this time through the bird's eyes. The woods surrounding him were rather thick, but he could see the hills due north of him. They looked to be a day, perhaps two away. Closing his eyes once more and breaking contact with the bird, he rubbed them and set out due north.
After a day's march, Aaralon felt exhausted. Despite plenty of rest and conjuring food and water, he had spent most of his life in the College, and hadn't had much, if any time for adventuring outdoors. Still, he felt confident that his direction was true, and the hills would soon by in his reach. He noticed that the woods were starting to get rather dark, so he decided to break off the march for now and find a safe place to bed down for the night. Searching for a secluded clearing of some sort, his eyes spotted a telltale orange flicker of a campfire to the left of him. Not knowing what to expect, Aaralon proceeded with caution, using a few stealth spells he had learned to sneak up towards the camp, eventually peering out into it through a thick hedge.
