Loss of Privilege
LaDonna, Elizabeth, Emily, Aaron, Katie, Tanya, Marcel, and LaDonna's five kids all made the trek in a large van LaDonna had rented for the escape. Elizabeth had left a letter behind for Antoine and Victor, explaining why she had decided to leave.
They stopped for dinner in a little town in Alabama. And it was there that Elizabeth felt that the privilege she had been steeped in for her entire life was now unquestionably gone. The staff didn't seat them for an hour, and then the waiters ignored them half the time they were there. They regarded the kids, a mixture of Black, white and biracial, with contempt, and Elizabeth and LaDonna, an interracial lesbian relationship, with borderline malice. But instead of surrendering to the hate, it simply steeled Elizabeth's resolve and quiet fury. Fuck them. If that's how they reacted, she'd love LaDonna all the more.
