Kael wonders what he’ll have to say.
Lord’s thanks
Kael and Ria approach the pavilion where Lord Greyheart is seated. As they approach, the crowd makes way, recognizing the two champions, and once again, there’s even a few cheers. The commotion draws attention, and Lord Greyheart notices the pair as they draw closer.
“Ah, Kael! I see you’ve decided to join the celebration for once! Wonderful, I wanted to speak with you. Please, come on up.”
He has to practically shout to be heard over the noise. Between the musicians and the general celebration, it’s quite loud. There’s a small staircase leading up onto the platform, and the guards at the base stand aside to let Kael and Ria ascend. Bernal greets them at the top, giving Kael a hearty slap on the back in greeting.
“We heard of your deeds, Kael. Quite the tale! It’s good to see you in one piece, lad.”
Before Kael can respond, Bernal ushers him over to lord Greyheart, who nods. “I concur with Bernal’s words, champion Kael. I’ve heard nothing but praise for what you and the other champions accomplished on the battlefield. You, all of you, are to be commended. I would reward you further, but I understand that you’ve returned with a different sort of spoil.”
Kael is confused for a moment, and then realizes what he meant. “No, my lord, she’s not…it’s not like that at all!”
Lord Greyheart quirks an eyebrow, leaning on his one elbow. “Oh? You’re saying you deserve something more, then?”
Kael’s eyes widen. “No, of course not, my lord, I wouldn’t presume to…”
He’s interrupted by Ria laughing and punching him in the shoulder. “He’s messing with you, big guy!”
Lord Greyheart grins. “Guilty. You’re so serious, Kael. Relax.”
Bernal chuckles. “It’s a celebration, lad. No need to be tense.”
Lord Greyheart nods. “Indeed. Yes, I’ve been informed of your new…guest. While I don’t disapprove, I do ask that you be sure you are able to give everyone the attention they deserve. You understand why I have an interest here?”
Kael nods. “I do, my lord. Your warning is unnecessary, however. Gabby is, as you said, simply my guest.”
Ria laughs. “For now. I saw how she looked at you big guy.”
Kael blushes, and Ria laughs again, turning to Lord Greyheart. “But still, I don’t think it’ll be an issue. Evie and I are happy, believe me.”
Lord Greyheart smiles, shaking his head. “I won’t say that I understand the dynamic, but I trust you both. That’s why you’re champions. Very well. Kael, have you explained my interest in all of this to Ria?”
Kael shakes his head. “No, my lord.”
Lord Greyheart nods. “You have my permission to do so. Privately.”
He sighs. “On to other matters. With Karlia retreating and licking their wounds, we have a grand opportunity. Already, word of our victory is spreading, and with it, word of our strength. Already, I’ve received messages from neighboring states asking for an alliance.”
Kael nods. “Seems like a good thing, my lord. Others will flock to our banner, seeking protection. It will prevent a repeat of this whole situation.”
Lord Greyheart smiles, seemingly proud of Kael’s response. “Just so. Very good. You may make a fine leader one day, Kael.”
Kael shuffles his feet slightly, uncomfortable with the praise. “Thank you, my lord.”
Lord Greyheart looks to Ria. “Any insight you wish to share?”
Ria shakes her head. “No, my lord. I’m a fighter, it’s what I'm good at. I don’t have the mind for leadership.”
Lord Greyheart sighs. “I once thought that as well. None can tell what the future might bring, champion Ria. And don’t sell yourself short, im sure you would make a fine leader.”
Before she can respond, Lord Greyheart continues. “Regardless, we will speak further another time. Go enjoy the celebrations, you’ve earned it.”
Seeing that they’re dismissed, Kael and Ria bow to lord Greyheart, before heading back down into the crowd. Ria’s hand finds Kael’s again, and the two of them smile at each other. However, something of Lord Greyheart’s words stick with Kael. Much talk of leadership. Somehow, it seems important, though Kael can’t say why.
His train of thought is interrupted when Ria kisses him on the lips. “Hey big guy, I know that look. Now isn’t the time for deep thinking. It’s time to celebrate!”
As she pulls him into the crowd, Kael smiles. She’s right. Plenty of time for thinking later.
For now, time to unwind.
