Chapter 4

What does she see?
Loki, the wayward son
What if Frigga had the foresight to foresee the bad path Loki would eventually go down?
That is precisely what happened when Odin brought home the abandoned baby frost giant which he subsequently named Loki. Frigga had a glimpse into the future and witnessed the chaos and strife the child’s choices would sow, both on Asgard and Midgard.
And Frigga‘s response was one of great compassion and empathy. She saw a pitiable child, always struggling to fit in, never truly feeling he belongs in Asgard, but having completely lost his roots with Jotunheim as well.
And so, Frigga resolved to raise the boy close to her breast. “You are my son and always will be,” she would tell him over and over. “No matter what dark path you should thread or what misdeeds have passed by your hand, I will always be your mother, you will always be my son, your home is always by my side, and I will always love you.”
And just like that, the little frost giant flourished in Asgard as a royal prince. His origins as a son of Jotunheim was not hidden, but rather lauded as a symbol of the magnanimity of Odin.
Loki proved to be a prodigy, mastering many different arts from a young age. He particularly excelled in magic and subterfuge. His disposition leaned heavily towards underhanded tactics, unconventional warfare, and cunning, however Loki was no slouch in the warrior department. He trained as long and hard as the best warriors of Asgard. Some would say his efforts even surpasses the effort that the top ten thousand warriors of Asgard puts into their training.
While Thor could frequently best his half-brother in single combat while they were growing up, due to his raw talent alone, by young adulthood, this was no longer the case. Loki could consistently beat Thor purely by the virtue of hard-forged skill.
Loki eventually took his place as the right hand of Odin, embarking on many campaigns and claiming countless victories for Asgard. With his sword, Laevateinn, he was known to be undefeatable in battle, earning him the name, ‘God of Victory.’
A side effect of Loki becoming the model prince of Asgard was Thor evolving to be quite a misfit. Thor was known as the party prince, preferring to indulge in drink and festivities rather than serious work. Thor still very much enjoyed a good fight, but due to his wild, unruly nature, would almost always cause more trouble than it was worth deploying him in the first place. Really, the only ideal use for the ‘God of Thunder’ is to throw him smack in the middle of an enemy army and let him let loose with his lightning and hammer.
Throughout Loki’s rise, Frigga was right by his side, not only providing counsel, but also moral support and parental companionship. To say that Frigga was proud of Loki would be an understatement. There was no prouder mother than her in all of Asgard, or even all nine realms.
Loki often sought Frigga for periods of rest and respite. He would hang around her villas, lie in her lap as she combed his hair, and they would speak of everything that weighed on their hearts.
Yet there was one topic which Frigga had never dared broach in their idyllic moments together. And that was her concerns regarding Loki’s sexual proclivities.
It was hardly a secret that Loki tends to get around. He was devilishly handsome and still boyishly young by Asgardian standards. But Frigga’s knowledge of the truth extends deeper than mere floating rumors and gossip. Because of her deep concern for her wayward son, Frigga often monitors Loki by means of magic.
From her observations, it became evident to Frigga that Loki was highly sexually active. His indiscretions were not merely limited to Asgard, but sporadic throughout the nine realms. However Asgard and Midgard remained his favorite hunting grounds for sexual conquests.
From her astute observations, Frigga also noted that Loki’s preferences in mates skewed heavily towards women who were spoken for. This glaring fact did not sit well with Frigga the slightest, as it was dishonorable and abhorrent to her sensitivities.
Yet Frigga could not bring herself to chastise the boy. Or rather, she did not know how to broach such a matter. Whenever she sees Loki, all she could think about was how precious he was and how proud she is of how far he had come away from the dark path that had been predestined for him.
So Frigga remained quiet, reasoning that she should have no say in her son’s private matters. He was an adult, however barely, by Asgardian standards, and he should be able to make his own decisions. However she couldn’t help but keep observing Loki, reasoning that she had to make sure that her beloved son wasn’t going to fall back onto the dark path.
