Chapter 20 by commander_captain commander_captain

What's next?

Liv shoots it.

The mysterious enemies were what made the Bravos most fearful. They were not experienced as adventurers, but shared an sense for when to slow down. Here they had reached a standstill, in a dark corner of a cave they were running out of ideas. There was a mutual silence as each thought through how they would defeat this new opponent. All the while the writhing black mess of flesh was staring at them with its dozen eyes and open mouths.

"It would appear to be constructed, but I see no stitches. No God would allow such a vile creature to be created." Fuu thought aloud, she was not confident in her own understanding of the situation, but did not want to be pessimistic.

"If it is alive, then perhaps the walls aren't rock. They could be a sort of carapice or shell." Becky said, to agreeable murmuring. A silence followed. There was of course deducing what they faced, but taking action was far more difficult. The monster was scary. It was disgusting to look at, and seemed to melt through the walls like an out of water limpet.

Liv was unphased by the silence, where it brought others discomfort she found that without any noise she could think clearly, and the slight despair gave her more motivation. She had been silent all the while that her allies were inspecting it.

"Cover your ears. Stand back. I'm going to shoot it." Liv said decisively, lifting her rifle. The other three bravos stood behind her raised rifle. Emmaline staring daggers at her.

"I hope you aren't trying to get us killed." Emmaline retorted with an upturned nose. Liv ignored the comment and put her eye to her sight. She knew that Fuu could respect her decision making, but the other two only looked up to their leader. Looking through her scope she made a point to ignore black flesh on the wall and look at the transparent rock in front of it. She could see faint cracks from where it had been formed. She fired and and prepared to fire again, there was almost no mark, but she did not stop to think or doubt herself. She fired again in the same spot. Four shots, and then a crack had formed, a fine line hanging in space. She at it, and gravel pinged off it, spraying the Bravos in a faint dust. Another shot and the bullet reached the other side.

Liv got up and changed her position. Behind her laying on the ground, three Bravos hoping the Gnolls where too afraid of whatever was in this room to investigate the noise. She took up a position so that she could hit the target through the hole she had made. By her estimate the bullet would half half a millimeter of room to fit through the hole- "far more than enough," she thought.

She crouched down and held her breath. She waited a moment; this was her mark, and fired. She knew it hit as soon as the creature shrieked it's faint cry. She she looked up it was withering, and when it was small enough it retreated through the holes in the cave system. The Bravos get up and began to breath again, they had been holding their breath in anticipation. Where the room was once pitch black, it now shone with optimism. Fuu nodded at Liv in approval, there was no need to congratulate her, it was what she did.
